SIAP- Didn't see anything though. Lange got a write-up in FranGraphs, specifically mentioning how nasty his curveball is.

This kid is going to be an absolute stud. And honestly, since he is going to get a full week's rest with the Thursday-Saturday series, I think CPM might stick him out there next Friday.

I know the new ball has been discussed a good bit, but are some guys getting more bite on their breaking balls with the lower seams?
Obviously we didn't see Lange throw last year.

Also I'm not trying to take anything away from Lange (not saying he's a product of the new ball or something like that)

Lange is a special pitcher for sure. Some last night were saying he is better than Nola. I won't say that until he has a year or more under his belt, but his future is bright.

Good find HamBone.

I thought it would have the opposite effect on breaking pitches because it's not as easy to grip the ball. But I don't claim to be a scientist

From what I understand, the new seems are suppose to make the ball break a little less, if anything.

I think Kyle Peterson actually mentioned something about that last weekend. I loved how KP broke down his grip and arm motion and how little disparity there is in the arm motion of his curve vs. his fastball.

Yes, but I think the new ball is affecting some pitchers differently than others.
Have heard many get more run on fastballs because the ball spins faster.
So I guess it's POSSIBLE to get more break on curveballs, but I'm surely not an expert and never threw anything resembling a curveball.

To be quite honest, I don't think the ball would make a bit of difference for Lange. Guy could probably throw a 12-6 curve with a medicine ball.

At the same point in his career he is better than Nola. Not really even close. Nola made a big leap between fresh and soph year.

From everything CPM said pre season, the injured freshman...Latz (?)....is supposed to be the best of all the freshmen. So hopefully we will have 2 studs when he returns completely healthy.

The answer to this question is that each pitcher will be affected differently, for the most part it is safe to assume that breaking pitches will have less bite. If you look at the way Lange grips his 12-6 curveball he uses his index finger in a relatively unique way that seems to be unaffected by the "lower" seems. I would assume that he would gain a little more movement with larger seems, but because of his unique grip I'm not positive that is the case.

I agree, and from this perspective, I would think it bodes very well for a guy like him going into professional ball. Obviously last years ball was very forgiving, making pitchers look better. Therefore, those that can excel with this ball most likely will get a much better evaluation grade from pro scouts.

On the other hand pitchers that lose effectiveness from last year to this, I think will be hurt by it. jmo. Or maybe this is obvious

It's pretty insane to think we've gone basically from Ranaudo/Coleman to Gausman to Nola and now to Lange. A lot of places don't see that much quality pitching ever let alone back to back to back

The stat lines -- especially the one he had vs. Ole Miss -- are sickening good. He's not Nola yet, but he surely is headed in that direction. I wish Poche were as good as he was thought to be. We'd have a dynamite 1-2 punch.

The fact that his first 2 SEC starts (as a freshman!) he went:

8IP, 3H, 1ER, 13K, 0BB; and
7IP, 3H, 1ER , 6K, 2BB

is not only unfair, it's straight up disgusting.

Nola was/is outstanding, as was Gausman, but Lange's stuff reminds me a lot of Stephen Strasburg with more control, and less velocity. His pitches are nasty, but very accurate.
