From left to right: Jake Latz, Alex Lange, Doug Norman and Jake Godfrey

quote:

So much had to happen for freshman pitchers Alex Lange, Jake Godfrey, Doug Norman and Jake Latz to be here together at LSU.

Latz passed on nearly $1 million offered to him by a major league team during draft week in June. Godfrey, a longtime Notre Dame commitment and fan, fell short of meeting that school’s qualification standards.

Norman, once a Georgia commitment, wouldn’t be here had the UGA coaching staff not been fired two years ago and had his parents not changed their minds about him playing 13 hours from home.

There’s another thing, too: None of them were afraid to be part of a No. 1-ranked signing class full of highly recruited stars.

What’s that all mean? LSU has two of the top 20-30 freshman pitchers in college baseball, something only Stanford and North Carolina can claim. Meanwhile, Lange was ranked as the 52nd-best righty last year, and Norman was 85th.

I'll never forget the time I met Jake Latz. I was in Chicago restructuring a deal to save this multi-billion dollar company and I had just spoken with President Obama, though at the time he was a Senator. ANYWHO, I had to stop by my suite to pick up a few things and I bumped into Jake and who I assumed were his family members right outside the hotel. Nice kid.

No. He realized he wasn't as good as he thought he was after seeing these four. He was out of shape, too.

Aside from the obvious talent I like the closeness that appears to be there among these guys; Referring to themselves as the freshman four. It reminds me of Skip's 2000 team that he once described as the tightest group of players he ever coached. Look how that turned out.

We're gonna have some growing pains with all these freshman pitchers so I hope everyone gives them time to get acclimated to D1 competition

That's only if PM gives them the opportunity to get acclimated. Goes for all of the freshman we'll need in SEC play.

I completely agree. They will all give up some hits and runs early on and no one can predict how they react to pitching in front of 5,000-10,000 screaming fans. But I think this group has a real good chance of being special.

He's already said he wants them to get as many innings as he can in pre-conference play.

Best freshman class since 1992?

3 freshman all-Americans that year.
