Funes didn't pay players with gift cards. And while Funes likely did steal donations, he didn't pay players. Technically, he didn't really pay anyone; he fraudulently had OLOL make payments to them under the guise of payment for work performed and home medical care for a sick child.
They read the headline and boiled it down to LSU pays players with stolen gift cards. It's really not that hard to get the actual information; everyone can find the Funes Bill of Information if you just google it.

John Alexander was scamming people too. Ask Tasha Thibodeaux, a prominent LSU Alum, whose Uncle used to be a BOS member. She posted DM's from Alexander looking for investors.

LSU wasn't involved as an institution. JPF was laundering money through his associates. Some of whom happen to be family of ex and current LSU players.
He didn't pay off recruits' families to choose LSU. I promise he didn't give Vadal Alexander $180k once already at LSU to make LSU football better.

I mean, the dude sent money to Rohan Davey's mom and sister after he was finished playing for LSU. This is just a strange case.
It seemed like he was doing whatever he wanted (like flying relatives and friends to Saints and LSU Bowl games on the hospital's dime basically). And the dude was making 300+k per year. Pathetic to take money that is meant to help people who have health issues and use it for fun, etc.

The ncaa very well may hit LSU, but this OLOTL situation wasn’t about funneling money to players. This was one man laundering money that he was stealing for himself.

If there’s no real connection to LSU here then it doesn’t make sense he’d use higher profile people than random nobodies he knew. If you’re trying to stay under the radar you don’t use people or a family most people know.
There’s a bigger reason he was using LSU players and their families.

while I routinely tell my UT friends how poorly their program has performed, especially considering their resources, if you had a bad time living in Austin you were doing it wrong
there are literally swarms of hot women everywhere on Rainey and tons of shite to do.
