Here's an odd article on LSU's upcoming 2014 season:

LINK

First they recap 2013:

quote:

There were a couple good wins, sure—the late-season triumph over Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M, the mid-season win over Florida (though that one didn’t really hold up) and even the season opener against TCU.

But the loss to an average Georgia team was heartbreaking, and road defeat at the hands of Ole Miss (a grand indignity for any LSU fan, I can assure you) and, of course, the early November loss against Alabama that eviscerated any hopes the Tigers had of putting together a great season. An Outback Bowl win over Iowa? Sure, it was nice.

Not one mention of beating the NC runners up.

Then the preview for 2014:

quote:

Alabama once again looks like the class of the nation and Auburn figures to be right in the title mix as well, which means that the Tigers enter the season as the No. 3 team in its own division.

The first month of the season is basically a waste, as the Tigers will spend their September rolling past a series of almost entirely meaningless opponents—Sam Houston State, UL-Monroe, Mississippi State and New Mexico State.

No mention of Wisconsin.

And then the Auburn game
quote:

WE will learn a lot about this team on Oct. 4. That date looms large for both programs; Auburn will be looking to prove that they are for real again this season, while LSU will be looking to make a statement about being back among the contenders. I think the season turns on that one.

Not one mention of LSU beating Auburn last year to show that LSU never left the "contenders". But then they come back and predict a 10-2 campaign
quote:

The Verdict ...: LSU is still a great program. A Top 10 program. A contender. But at the moment, at least, they are not the trendy or hot program in the West. Auburn and Alabama are those programs. With that in mind, Miles needs to make a statement, and preferably, he needs to make a statement this year. But I’m not sure he’ll be able to pull it off. Look for a couple of losses and another good-but-not-great bowl bid for this bunch. Prediction: 10-2

I guess I should know better than to read an LSU football article on a site called "about.com".

I just thought it was strange that they seemed to be disrespecting LSU (especially by not doing their homework), but then turn around and predict a decent season.

Turns out he's a yankee:

Tim has worked professionally as a writer, reporter and editor for 12 years, including stints at three different newspapers in Pennsylvania and Maryland. His writing earned awards from both the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association and the Chesapeake Associated Press. He is a member of the Football Writers Association of America.

Tim has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Penn State University and a master's degree in American studies from the University of Maryland.

I would expect a yankee to at least acknowledge how fearless Wisconsin is for scheduling a game with an SEC power.

But then the final prediction of 10-2 seems fair treatment. That's what confused me. If they had predicted an 8-4 season with losses to Wisky, UF, AU and UA that would've seemed consistent with the disrespect.

Yes, thanks for the great summary/commentary. But now I feel the need to bring these issues to the comment section or inbox of the writer.

Average Georgia team

LOLOLOLOLOLOLLLLLL

UGA was the most talented team in the SEC before they were scalped by injuries during and after the LSU game.

when reading any national opinion, you better be prepared to take only pieces out of it. they are never thorough in fact gathering.

-ga was damn good
-first month is useless??
-bama/aub are trendy because of the media.
-not sure why Miles needs to make a statement this year? the only thing different about this year is maybe bama takes a small step back....??

I agree. I like LSU's chances in Tiger Stadium against the Tide this year. I don't think 11-1 is all that far fetched.

Pretty spot on accurate imo.

Until Les proves he isnt a 10-2 10-3 and a cap one bowl calibur of coach on a consistent basis, these guys are right.

Well in fairness, LSU hasn't beaten Bama in a while and has finished 9-3 or 10-2 quite often in Les' tenure here. I am happy with another 10-2 season as long as we beat Alabama or Auburn. 9-3 -11-1 should be the bench mark to start any season as long as Les keeps recruiting like he does and Chief is on staff. IMO, 2015 will be the year for higher expectations, but then again, nobody saw 2011 coming either.

Really? What if those 2 losses are both to SEC West teams? Then 10-2 doesn't look so good. I don't expect it to happen this season, but LSU needs to make a statement soon, and erase the bad taste that still lingers from 1/9/12. At some point 10-2 or 9-3 isn't gonna be good enough, and it shouldn't be.

Not in terms of leaving out Wisconsin and then going on to say,

quote:

Then I don't find it accurate for them to say,

quote:

Auburn will be looking to prove that they are for real again this season, while LSU will be looking to make a statement about being back among the contenders.

When, if beating Auburn makes one a "contender", LSU is already among the contenders with their victory last season.

The final prediction is pretty spot on, IMO. But if you look at Saban's era at Bama, he averages 11-2 per year. IOW, that's a pretty elite average. That's what vexed me about the article, it looked like a hatchet job at first, but then came up with a respectable 10-2 prediction.
