that has occurred between our 2 schools the past week.

when The Golden Band from Tigerland strikes up "Step to the Rear" during pregame - it will be cool for me as Coach Dietzel wrote the lyrics for and introduced that fight song to Carolina when he arrived in Columbia. *edit

I don't know how many Gamecocks will be in Baton Rouge this weekend. I do know that those who are will experience a large dose of Louisiana love and all the food/fixins/spirits that go along with it will be quite fine. we Gamecocks are pretty creative with our boils/seafood/bogs. we don't ask - we just eat.

hope y'all win your way to Atlanta in December and bigger things to come over New Years.

Never knew that. Pretty cool that its made its way back to Baton Rouge and the Tiger band will be playing it in Death Valley.

quote:

USC band director James Pritchard obtained a band arrangement of the Elmer Bernstein-penned song "Step to the Rear" from the Broadway musical How Now, Dow Jones in 1968 and the marching band played the song at the first game of the 1968 season. It caught the ear of Coach Paul Dietzel who contacted Pritchard about making it the official fight song of the University to replace the original "Carolina Fight Song" (or "Carolina Let Your Voices Ring", now called the "Old Fight Song"). Dietzel wrote the lyrics for the song, but asked that he remain anonymous because knowledge that the football coach wrote the lyrics might render it unacceptable to the basketball program. The song was officially introduced on 16 November 1968 prior to the football game against Virginia Tech and has been the University's fight song since the fall of 1969.[1]

From a fellow South Carolinian, I'm sure anyone wearing garnet and black will get a very warm welcome in Baton Rouge tomorrow, especially considering the circumstances. Good luck the rest of the season.

I think that Dietzel is buried in downtown Baton Rouge (at First United Methodist). Would be nice to have some garnet flowers placed there at his headstone.

Well, I did my part. I wore a garnet shirt yesterday and a purple one today.
