So there doesn’t seem to have been a legitimate breakdown of BYU provided for you in a confined area - I hope to remedy that here. The BYU posters haven’t been too informative - some I think have just been trolling as BYU fans but they seemed to be saying things a little too inside for the average BYU fan to know (is Ed Orgeron supposed the be the Farmer Fran that guy was referencing?). I don’t have evidence just a thought. Also I’m not entirely sure what the posting guidelines are with respect to language - so I’ll keep the swears out (guidelines, and you know, I’m a good mormon boy ).

First off LSU is deservedly a heavy favorite to win the game. The talent discrepancy of the rosters is quite glaring particularly as you get past starters, I know LSU is loaded with talented young guys and there are some positions I see as a definitive problem and some positions I am less concerned about as of today. That being said - it’s preseason and little is known about how things really are for either side - due to the completely closed nature of LSU in fall camp and BYU being fairly closed as well.

I figured I would break this out by position group to break out what will likely end up being a lengthy post. Questions, comments, concerns? I don’t particularly care - but may respond. An overarching theme I keep seeing here is something to the effect of “BYU is slow and has no speed to match our athletes.” Top to bottom that is absolutely true, but it’s been a big point of emphasis for our coaches and we’ve got guys that have a high gear that I don’t think I’ve seen any LSU fan recognize. Are they Donte Jackson? No. There are some guys that can scoot though. I won’t post 40 times because unless it’s NFL combine I think they are generally unreliable because of hand timing - if they have 100 meter times I will post those because they were timed in competition and feel more reliable to me.

Also, to try to make something this lengthy as concise as possible I won’t be covering everyone that might be seen - just the people I think will be most heavily involved. Also it would take too long to edit for grammar/spelling, so I'm not worrying about that.

Quarterback: Tanner Mangum enters as the unquestioned starter being his 2nd year in the system - last year he was behind Taysom Hill. Mangum is a returned missionary so he’s older (23 I think?) When he was coming out of High School he was co-MVP of the Elite 11 with Jameis Winston so BYU fans have a lot of high hopes for his performance. He started for a large portion of his Freshman campaign - he was a few months removed from his mission and performed admirably on the whole but struggled against better defenses (a big factor of that was O-line play in 2015). He can move a little but no one would mistake him for any type of dual threat quarterback. His strength coming out of High School had been his accuracy and he has a pretty live arm - he’s no Elway but can make the necessary throws. Will the struggle against elite defenses be remedied? We’ll get to know pretty soon.

Running Back: This is going to be “by committee” so there are a couple of guys to cover here. The group is replacing Jamaal Williams from last year. Squally Canada is slated right now to be 1a. He’s a good back (obviously no where near Guice - but then again who is?). He has a decent burst and runs with some aggression. It seemed to me that he had some difficulty last year, in back up duty to Jamaal, making the right read on setting up his blockers consistently - hope that’s improved. Riley Burt is 1b, he’s a more exciting prospect. He is a redshirt Sophomore and ran a 10.8 100 meter in high school so he can cook a little bit if he gets the chance. Ula Tolutau is 250 and pretty agile for a dude his size. He just returned from a mission and will probably see some touches but probably not too much. There are some others that might see some PT in KJ Hall and Trey Dye.

WR: Wide receivers are a huge unknown - they graduated a lot of seniors but there are some promising guys in the wings. The big question with BYU receivers the last bit has been them competing with a good press man coverage. It has been the primary focus of the entire offseason and it will be vital that this be improved, if it hasn’t BYU might not score. Jonah Trinnaman is a returning player from last year - probably the fastest guy on the team (10.68 100 meter in High School) and a freak of an athlete (41 inch vert). Rumor has it that he is faster than that now but I don’t have reliably verifiable numbers to back that up. He’ll need to be more consistent with his hands. Micah Simon is another sub 11 100 meter guy - he is supposed to be more consistent with his hands thus far and will probably be a favorite target. Beau Tanner has been a reliable receiver - he feels like a stereotypical BYU receiver in that he’s got good athleticism, not great - but he’s consistent and runs precise routes. Talon Shumway good size 6’3” 210 not a burner but solid possession receiver that has sure hands and a good radius. There will be a bunch of others that see time that are also exciting just trying to make the reading more manageable.

OL: The middle of the line is solid and I really don’t have any concern about there being an issue for Tejan Koroma (C), Tuni Kanuch (RG), and Keyan Norman (LG). I know you guys have a good front seven but these 3 I think will win some and lose some but I mostly see this area of the position as a draw - if you think differently you will be surprised. The tackles on the other hand? In my estimation, this is probably going to be the biggest problem for BYU. I really feel like the athleticism, size, and strength of LSUs edge rush is going to be problematic. There is some talent in the tackle spot but our LT Thomas Shoaf is a little undersized at about 275lb. He’s got good footwork but he needs more strength. The right tackle was just won in camp by Austin Hoyt. I predict he struggles mightily with LSU speed. (I could be wrong - but I don’t have reason to be too optimistic here)

TE: Tight end is an interesting position group for BYU. The previous OC Robert Anae didn’t recruit the position or really use it. The new OC Ty Detmer has made it a point of emphasis to get solid TE play back at BYU. There is a true Freshman in Matt Bushman that I hope turns out to be what he is billed as - seems to have good hands and good athleticism for the position to help with some mismatches. Being a frosh - who knows. They converted a receiver Moroni Laulu-Pututau (MLP). MLP was an inconsistent receiver - he had some incredible acrobatic catches and then would drop some easy ones. Hopefully that is cleaned up some.

FB: Seems there might be some of what you guys expect in having the TE play some H back type of position with the full back. The dedicated FB is Brayden El-Bakiri. Good blocker - won’t get many touches in the run or pass game though.

DT: They run about 3 deep in both DT positions Big bodied boys that they can switch out enough to keep em fresh. With 6 of them there’s too many to go into a ton of detail on. They will be eating up blocks to let the LB do their thing I predict the interior line play to be a draw. With the depth those guys will be relatively fresh come the 4th quarter.

DE: Corbin Kaufusi is a big boy - 6’9” 285. His height concerns me - it’s hard to be the low guy when you are that tall. But it has its benefits in batting down passes that come your way. An ex-basketball player for BYU he has good feet. This is the first full off-season spent on football so hopefully there has been some improvement from where he was last year. Sione Takitaki is our speed edge rush guy. He sat out last year due to some personal issues - everyone is talking about how hungry he is playing. Hopefully that equates to on the field production - and that he isn’t over pursuing his assignments. He is quite gifted. The depth at the DE position is an issue. I’m hoping we don’t have to play many downs without these 2 in there. (Many of my friends who are fans disagree with me here - they think we’re deeper than I would give credit for - TBD)

LB: The linebacking corp is pretty exciting for us - though not deep. Butch Pau’u is the middle backer and he can absolutely lay the wood. As a fan of the game I think you’ll love watching the joy he gets from hitting - not saying he is as good as Jamaal Adams but when I was watching Jamaal last year in some games he was just so physical and seemed like hitting people hard brought him joy - Butch is like that. And he plays with such great instinct. He had some injury issues last year and I hope he can stay healthy all year long this year. Fred Warner and Francis Bernard are gifted athletes that work great in space - excellent cover skills have been on display against high level talent from both. (Check Francis’ one handed int vs Utah last year and Warner’s picked 6 v Boise State to get a better visual of what I’m trying to portray.)

CB: Realizing that this post is to fans of Corner Back university - the talent you guys have put out from LSU in the defensive secondary is AMAZING. BYU historically has struggled to get high-level players consistently at CB. We currently have probably the best batch we’ve ever had. As another poster posted they got torched last year. No two ways about it. What I noticed though was a lot had to do with technique and positioning. They were super young Redshirt Freshman, True Freshman and they made some mistakes. It was almost never that they did everything right, they just got beat by better athletes. Which as BYU fans makes us excited because that has been far from the case in the past. Troy Warner started most of last year as a true freshman - really solid DB. Not the fastest guy on the team but has enough speed. Not afraid to hit and plays with good instinct. Dayan Ghanwoloku (Lake if you are looking him up from last year) good speed, run support, and instinct. Chris Wilcox - the fastest guy of the bunch (10.68 100 meter in high school) and he got burned a bunch last year because he was super raw. Has made a lot of improvements over the offseason and is pushing the starters for starter minutes.

Safety: Replacing Kai Nacua who was a stud for us last year is going to be tough. A group of Micah Hannemann, Matt Hadley, Chaz Ah You, and Tanner Jacobson are going to be efforting that replacement. Hannemann and Hadley got a bunch of PT last year and are good hard-nosed safeties that love to hit (a lot like current Safety for the Chiefs Dan Sorenson was for us - not that talent level necessarily but good physical safeties. They might not wow you with their athleticism but are always in the right spot and will launch like a missile into anything). Tanner Jacobson is a transfer from Texas Tech verdict is still out on him as far as I can tell. Chaz Ah You was a highly recruited Freshman who’s getting a lot of love, I’m always hesitant to anoint Freshman before they have played a down of college ball though.

Well I didn't want to be the one who broke up your posts but since that happened I just want to say I admire this effort.

There you have it - as thorough as I’m willing to spend time on right now. Takeaways pre-game for me are as follows in no particular order:

1) If the offensive tackles have as much of an issue with your d-ends as I think they are going to have, BYU is going to need to address that with personnel packages TE/FB/extra blockers to give Magnum time. You can have the most talented QB in the world, but if he doesn’t have time - it doesn’t matter.

2 )If the WR have not addressed the issues they have had against physical defensive backs the protection schemes won’t matter much and it’s going to be a long game.
If Magnum does have time, I think you guys are going to be impressed.

3) I think our depth at the DT positions is going to help us stay competitive late into the game.

4) Takitaki may surprise you with his abilities as a d-end.

5) Guice is going to be a nightmare to everyone all season. I hope we can keep him in the 150 range.

6) BYU had the 34th ranked total defense last year - I think we’ll be better this year. So installing a new offense in the first game of the season could make this game a squeaker. I don’t have any sort of research to back this up, I just don’t recall watching any team play in a new offense and come out looking really polished, that plays to BYUs advantage. In my estimation - you guys who think you’re going to hang a 30 pt differential on us are out of your damned minds (unless the defense is doing the scoring - which could be the case). The current spread I think is a good one, because I’m not sure if I take BYU or LSU to cover. (Probably lean BYU cover - you know - fandom and all that)

Right? It's from a Conan episode where he and Dave Franco do Tinder - that was his alias. He's brilliant.
