Ross Dellinger of the Advocate has listed some options to account for the recent injuries to Isaiah Washington and Christian LaCouture:

Defensive End (starter)
• Davon Godchaux
• Frank Herron
• Tashawn Bower
• Rashard Lawrence

Buck (backup)
• Sci Martin
• Ray Thornton

I suspect that Tashawn Bower would start at Buck if something ever happened to Key.

Nose Tackle (starter)
• Travonte Valentine
• Ed Alexander
• Greg Gilmore
• Rashard Lawrence

Does anybody know what number Layton Garnett has been assigned? I cannot find that information anywhere (his high school number was 47). The only thing I've read is that he has been practicing with Devin Voorhies.

Note: The 247 rating displayed for Travonte Valentine is from his original rating when he signed out of high school. His current JUCO rating is 0.8950.

Exactly how i have it drawn up on my chart. Think one or more of the freshman OLBs will be playing a lot this year with the injury to Washington now. Only have 2 guys at Buck, but 4 at F OLB. I think they move Bower and Thornton back and forth between Buck OLB and F OLB to make sure it's not just Martin providing relief to Key.

Valentine has not practiced or played one down at LSU yet. How do you list him as a starter in the middle of the line? I hope he is everything as advertised but he has even stepped on the field to stretch.

We're on the same page there.
I believe Thornton was a DE coming out of high school, so he seems like a prime candidate to move to the Buck, especially since Michael Divinity is already ahead of him at the F.

That's fair. But it's just a projection. It's not like I retrieved this depth chart from the official website.

We all do. I guess I'm just projecting based upon that advertisement.

1. Valentine practiced on the 2014 team, reports out of camp were always very positive for him; "Dominant" thrown around quite a bit

2. If Godchaux is moving out to DE to take Lacoture's sport, that leaves us with Valentine, Gilmore, Alexander and Lawrence at nose. Alexander and Lawrence are very talented players, but only freshmen, they aren't going to start off the season as starters. Gilmore hasn't exactly shown much in his 3 previous years here, so unless Valentine comes in and is just a shell of former self, Valentine is looking like the starter at NT.

This doesnt mean if Valentine starts he plays 50 snaps a game, the NT spot IMO will be heavily rotated, and depending on situation we might only use a "true" NT on 50-60% of defensive snaps. Even less against spread teams.

Also, coaches dont bring in JUCOs to not make an impact right away, and consider Valentine is about the only guy they've seen kicked off the team they've taken back after a JUCO run, and he got in trouble at JUCO. So that goes to show what they think of him as a player to overlook all his previous transgressions.

NT in a 3-4 isn't a super complicated position or task. Truthfully, size and strength are the two main components.... Alas, meet Mr Valentine.....
Gilmore may start out at Wisconsin, but shouldn't take Valentine long to be seeing at least 50% of the snaps there. He's not a true freshman afterall. He's practiced with LSU, hes practiced and played at JUCO, he'll be fine.

Excellent post. I think it's safe to assume TV will either start or be rotated in very often.

As far as the depth chart, It's amazing how much we actually look like a 3-4 now.

You realize the whole task of our NT will change if they do indeed have to move Godchaux to end, right?

Even with that being said, there's a little more too it than just being big & fat. More than likely none of these guys have much experience playing this technique

While we are on the subject of moving Godchaux, he might as well put Roddy back on defense since we're speculating

Obviously, but lets not pretend he will have to learn something the equivalent of MLB or Safety....
My point is, NT is one of the easier positions to learn, but a big part of it is having a player that commands blocks...
Translation: Valentine should be able to make a smooth entrance here

Should have never been moved in the first place. Young DL need to get reps on that side, not playing around 6th on the depth chart at TE so he can have his big blocking TE.

Front 7 depth (or experienced depth) feels pretty slim all of a sudden.

I hope that is way off for the rover position. That's a glaring weakness.

I'm hoping they are cross training Divinity and he is getting reps at Rover as well

These are great points. Many guys develop in JUCO and come in to play well. I just hope he can stay out of trouble.

Riley will be solid.

But yeah Alexander only being 212 pounds and MJ Patterson basically never being heard of is not settling to the stomach.
