With Beaux officially hired it appears LSU will be transitioning back to the 4-3 as the base defense. While this may seem like a big move, LSU mostly played out of a 4-2-5 this year as most teams do against a spread so I expect most things will be similar with exception to run heavy teams. This is how I see the line-up shaking out.

WDE: Andre Anthony , Soni Fonua , BJ Ojulari
3T: Glen Logan , Jaquelin Roy , Joseph Evans
1T: Tyler Shelvin , Siaki Ika , Jacobian Guillory
SDE: Neil Farrell , Ali Gaye , Jarell Cherry (Burch?)

W: Jacoby Stevens , Marcel Brooks , Josh White
M: Micah Baskerville , Antoine Sampah , Donte Starks
S: Damone Clark , Ray Thornton , Phillip Webb

CB: Derek Stingley , Elias Ricks , Raydarius Jones
CB: Cordale Flott , Kary Vincent , Jay Ward
S: Maurice Hampton , Eric Monroe , Devonte Lee
S: Todd Harris , Cameron Lewis , Jordan Toles

Again, this is just my guess at the base defense. Obviously guys like Vincent will play a lot of snaps in nickel. I think of it more of a 4-2-1-4 with Jacoby being the 1 that can move around and cause confusion.

Nice write up. I agree with almost anything as long as Stevens is on the field at all times.

Great work. Just imo Clark would def be our starting Mike and Ojulari would need to put on some serious weight to be WDE. He’s at like 225 and should be like 250-260 to play that spot.

From Coach O’s interview this morning:
quote:

On whether LSU will run a 4-3 or 3-4 base defense under Pelini: "We talked about it briefly. I think he knows how to do both, it’s going to be his decision on which way he wants to go and we will follow his lead."

In addition, Coach O said Pelini ran a 3-4 at some point before he came to LSU the 1st time. It will be up to Pelini.

You’re nuts if you think Damone Clark isn’t the starting MLB.

Keep Marcel Brooks rushing the passer.

Justin Thomas or Gaye would be the other starting DE opposite of farrell

I hope Harris doesn't start at safety. I know that he was already a starter, prior to the injury. Maybe he will improve with another year under his belt, like Vincent did. He creates decent depth, but the secondary got better when he was away.

Phillip Webb will probably be a Defensive end, Kary Vincent may be moved to safety, I could see Ricks starting opposite Stingley with Flott or Ward at nickel. Damone Clark and Baskerville should probably be switched. Neil Farrell will be a defensive tackle.

And don’t be surprised if we still run some 3-4, especially to take advantage of Marcel Brooks off the edge.

ETA: Harris will suprise a lot of people. He is legit. A three safety package with Hampton, Vincent, and Harris is asking to be made against pass happy teams

FWIW, Apparently Baskerville’s weakness is pass coverage.

But solid against the run - that’s why you’d see him come in on Goal-line this year.

So it would make sense to have him in the middle.

The nature of the 4-3 is that the middle guy is typically a better run stopper and outside guys are more hybrid type. In the NFL a lot of guys that play Will were safeties in college (Levonte David). Guys that play Sam have to be able to do both run and pass well. That's my reasoning for putting Clark there, definitely not a slight I just think thats how it will benefit LSU most. Besides, I would bet at least 80% of the time they will be in a 4-2-5 so both the Sam and the Mike will be in the middle. But hey, this is just my guess as a guy who knows a decent bit about defense. I fully trust O and Bo to put the right guys in the right spot and I'd be incredibly shocked if my projections were 100% right

Agree with D-Line

Will: Marcel Brooks
Mike: Damone Clark
Sam: Ray Thornton

CB: Stingley
CB: Flott/Ricks
Nickel: Vincent Jr.
S: Jacoby Stevens
S: Mo Hampton

I'd also like to see us run a 4-2-5 with those 5 secondary players on the field most of the time, save goal line/short yardage.

That secondary lineup is insane. Especially if Ricks develops quickly like Stingley/Greedy did

i think this will be huge, we have the personel to run a great 3-4 and i like it way better than the 4-3... i think Aranda should have just blitzed more... 3-4 is just so versatile... run that 4-3 vs auburn Georgia and ole miss

next year could be a bit of a transition year..

Farrell is listed at 298. He’s either gonna be a DT or he’s gonna need to trim up a bit.

If we’re just putting a OLB hand on the ground we’re still in a weird position.

Would rather see someone in the 260-280 range at SDE so we still have speed in passing downs.

We needed to trim up the DE position anyway even if Aranda stayed.

I hope we continue to play alot of single high safety with Stevens playing down in the box. I don't think you will really ever see Hampton and Harris on the field at the same time.

Wasn't that called the Mustang Defense in years past?
