I was there. DeVoe hustled his guys off the court and actually had them dress on the team bus. He knew he had gotten over, and wanted to hurry the hell out of there before the officials realized what had happened. That forever branded him as a piece of shite with me. I remember being happy when UT fired him.

I don't think I ever saw Dale Brown angrier.

Great story on probably the second greatest injustice in LSU basketball history, Bobby Knight's manhandling the officials in the 1987 NCAAA regional final the only game to top it.

Despite all of his other successes that season was probably Dale Brown's greatest coaching job as he rebuilt the team following the loss of multiple senior stars fromthe 1981 season.
I believe taht LSU was tied for first at 10-3 when the game was played. Hard to see how another teaam had played 15 conference games and LSU only 13, but nevertheless to be tied or virtually tied going into the final two weeks of the season was a phenomenal coaching job.

This gift and LSU beating Kentucky in the season finale gave Tennesse a tainted SEC championship.

OMG I was at that game and made the biggest fool of myself! I chased Dan Devine as he hustled his team towards the locker room and screamed that he didn't win and he was cheating by hurrying his team off the court. I think my boyfriend was a tad embarrassed at my behavior.

ETA: I meant Dan DeVoe not DeVine.

Holy Crap. I bet that's the first and last time his name has ever appeared on TD.

Good memory.

I will chip in a few tid-bits. Thanks for reminding me that today marked the 30 year anniversary of that game!

1) Yes, there were high school games in the Assembly Center to be played later that night. The problem was that a lot of the fans/students stayed around and chanted "hell no, we won't go" for a pretty good while after the end of the game. They had a big problem clearing the building for the high school games.

2) Someone referenced the Georgia game that LSU lost after holding the lead with 1 second left on the clock. What I recall the most about that game was yes, not only was it cold outside...it had SNOWED. There were 2-3 inches of snow on the ground, the game was on TV, and yet there were still about 12,000 in the building. THOSE were the glory days of LSU basketball, no doubt.

Didn't Dale tell Don Devoe that divorce was a sin when Devoe and his wife were divorcing because Devoe insulted Dale?

Also, if your own clock guy can't keep the clock going in your own house ...

Devoe was a joke for running his team off the court and for making them dress out on the team bus. If the roles were reversed, Daddy Dale would have stayed and done the right thing and replay the last eight seconds.

I was a student at the time and I just remember watching the clock not move until the ball crossed mid-court & being SO PISSED! :-)

The story I heard after the game was that year the NCAA/SEC was trying a new system where the clock was tied to the ref's whistle somehow & the clock stopped automatically when the ref blew his whistle. The deal was that the clock operator was trying to start the clock, but one of the refs was huffing & puffing into his whistle and the clock wouldn't start. Not sure if that ended up being true or not or I might have just been high.

I believe so.I think this incident happened a few years later. DeVoe irritated several coaches. He and Georgia's Hugh Durham had some off-court/in the paper battles, too.Maybe its because DeVoe himself was an Ohio State grad and was a Bob Knight assistant at Army.

The next two Tennessee-LSU games in the Assembly Center were last second, nail biters, too. In 1983 won 59-58 after Dale Ellis completed a strange four point playafter scoring a basket and getting a hard foul by John Tudor. That was the score with about 2:00 and no team scored the rest of the way.

In 1984, after Tennessee had won on a 25 footer at the buzzer in Knoxville, LSU won 61-59 on two free throws with :05 left.Late in the game during a timeout, "Mike the Tiger" (the mascot, not the real one ) stood on one of the chairs on the Vol bench while DeVoe had the team out on the court giving instructions. While Mike was getting the crowd going, a Tennessee reserve center named Seth McDonald went back to his customary place during games to the bench as the huddle broke and proceded to shove Mike to the ground.

When the game ended, Dan Federmann, the hero of Tennessee's 1982 "win" at the Assmebly Center saluted the crowd with an uncomplimentary hand gesture as he walked to the visitor's locker room.

Paul Galvan, the lead official in that 1982 game, was 'blackballed' by LSU for three seasons after the incident. However, either Dale and LSU relented or the blackball expired in the 1985-1986.LSU was the selected road kill for Senior Day at Rupp Arena in the regular season finale in Lexington. The lead official was none other than Paul Galvan. The game was nationally televised on NBC and the network had Dale "miked". After hanging with an outstanding UK team for 35 minutes, the Cats and officials swallowed whistles started to wear LSU down as Kentucky won, 68-57.During a break after UK took control NBC went to Dale's brief conversation with Galvan. Dale, with one hand on his hip and pointing with the other one said to Galvan,"you know,Paul,I blackballed you four years ago and if this continues I'll report you to the league and blackball you again."
