For those interested in watching Hess' summer debut, he will get the start tonight at 5pm central for the Bourne Braves against the Wareham Gatemen.
Bourne is the home team so their stream will be showing the game. You can find a link to the stream here: LINK
He should be facing off against SEC batters Luke Bonfield (Arkansas) and Tristan Pompey (Kentucky) for context. Also keep in mind that there is an emphasis on developing his third pitch, a changeup. So he's not going out there to strike out everyone he faces.
ETA: Game time was pushed to 5:45 central due to weather.
ETA: Hess went 3.2 innings in 58 pitches. He struck out 3 and walked two. Worked his change up in 10 times during the outing and threw it even when behind in the count, which led to the walks. No runs given up on 3 hits. Two of the hits were infield hits by Steven Kwan from Oregon St. Dude can fly.

Nick Coomes had hip surgery today and will miss the summer season and fall practice according to Tiger Rag. LINK

That's what I kept thinking watching the game yesterday. Two choppers to the left side of the infield, two infield hits. He's ridiculous.
ETA: Hess didn't really get barreled up from what I remember. I didn't see every single pitch, but he looked very good from what I saw. There is a pay article on D1Baseball.com that goes into great detail about his start.

Will Hess be able to be a starter in 18? Seems like he ran out gas after a few innings. Hopefully his endurance increases.

I think so. I wouldn't worry too much about his endurance fading in that CWS outing. He was pretty economical with his pitches yesterday even with the two walks. In relief he was just asked to air it out and try to go for the K. The approach will be different as a starter which will help with him going longer in the game from an endurance standpoint. Better command of the change up as his third pitch will help him go deeper from a times thru the order standpoint.

Eh, I'm okay if I'm the only one out on that limb. I've been wrong before.
The thing that gives me confidence is that he performed well as a starter this past season when he was only in the starting role. He also performed well in relief when he was only in the relief role.
There were some weeks mixed in in the regular season where he was pulling double duty and his performance in both roles suffered. But if he's allowed to concentrate on just one role I think he will succeed.

no, i meant 1 starter. we just need 2-3 more

I'd like to join that club, also. Because of our scarcity of experienced starters next year, I think Hess will have to be a primary weekend starter. It's going to be tough for fans to go back to not having a reliable Sunday starter next season.

Ah, got it.
Hopefully fall practice give us an indication on the rotation.

We went as far as we could this season.
What I'm saying is the cupboard is far from empty.
And anyone who thinks we won't be one of the 16 hosts can suck my beach balls.

I don't think we should question mark Hess' transition. Started in high school. Started mid-week. Was used as a weapon in relief because he wasn't needed. He'll be fine.

What's some realistic goals? Regionals? I would be ecstatic if we hosted a regional with all the roster turnover and with Walker being out.
Realistically?
If we can muster the pitching to get OUT of a regional, and we make it to Supers, I would almost expect a CWS birth. This team has something that not a lot of teams have. And that's almost a guaranteed win with Zach Hess on the bump. If he transitions smoothly, we are sitting on a 0-1,0-2 game in most of his starts. Meaning this team will need to rally behind him and get him a couple of runs. It's just too much of a leg up to have him out there.
If this team manages to be the first non-regional birth LSU in 6 seasons, I will be shocked.
Still LSU baseball. Still going to average 10K per COLLEGE BASEBALL GAME. That's insane considering the amount of games.
We are down but we are not out

We are replacing four starters. 3 of those are up the middle and the 4th is Deichman
