Saw that clip too. He was pretty adamant he wanted his guy to have a chance.

How did Manzeil and mccarron get away with it?
Hurts can't even throw a deep ball. Much less underthrow one.
And I'm assuming you guys are talking about Sullivan's jump ball and coming to a conclusion about the deep ball there. Every QB underthrows balls here and there.
What about his absolute strike to Davis on the TD? Or his no room for error throw to Chark on the sidelines?

It's not under thrown balls, it's being late on his throws that is a concern, it's under thrown because it's late. That pass to Chark was on the money, the one to drake was close. The other to Chark and Sullivan were late therefor under thrown. He's late on many of his passes but I think it's because he wants to make sure it's completed. The WRs might have a lot to do with that as well. They all need to work on it but there aren't many teams who will be able to keep up with our WRs so they may have a few steps on many of the DBs we see. They'll work on it. Penalties and Kicking game needs to improve and could be a huge concern.

Another stupid Etling thread full of ignorant assessments. Can always tell who the "football" ppl are.
Obviously not you. OP makes a good point on the deep ball. Although I don't think we will be throwing the deep ball as much, he has done a good job moving around in the pocket.

This is literally the 3rd "I'm concerned about Etling" thread on the home page.

Which is dumb, because I think he's doing fine. There were only a couple of throws that concerned me on Saturday. He's generally smart with the ball.

1. Under-thrown deep balls: Looking back through highlights and several deep balls were under thrown. Receivers helped him out but against elite DBs those are INTs.
Pretty sure ever QB in College and NFL underthrows a deep ball every now and then. That's why it's good to have receivers make adjustments on the ball and willing to compete with the DBs for catches.

That would certainly be concerning. We can't have teams not fearing the deep ball.
Yea but you also cant just rely on the deep ball, i am hoping Canada is keeping the short passing game of the play book hidden till we need it or something because we have not thrown hardly any short passes.

Etling does need to shore up a few aspects of his game. Was hoping by this point Narcisse would have overtaken him for the starting job, but that may take a few more games.

quote:Situational. Depends on where the coverage is, how tall are the, is it underthrown or just high (a WR can choose to play it short and high-point it therefore making it look underthorwn, trajectory dependent).

The deep ball to Chark in middle of field... no. That won't fly. So do agree to some extent. Underthrown on sideline can be a whole other thing. I'm more worried about late recognition and/or high balls over the middle FWIW.
quote:Etling has done an excellent job of stepping up and when blitz/pressure does come, recognizing from where. Most, close to all, of the times DE has scrambled is because of pressure up the middle. He does not go backwards like Jennings or Harris, for the most part, which is the last thing you want to do.
2. Lack of patience in the pocket: The second he senses heat - he's gone and doesn't keep his eyes downfield as well as some.
What I haven't seen is "un-patience" on blitzes where he immediately looks for a receiver in the area that pressure came from. The old hot route. Some of this is likely on the WRs (and TEs) too. They aren't recognizing the blitz and breaking off their routes to give DE that quick and easy "make 'em pay" 5 yds.

Oh brother.
Every long pass will not hit the receiver in perfect stride.
What we do have now--unlike with Malachi Dupre, Terrence Toliver and others--are tall receivers who will use their height and go up and fight for the ball.
Double coverage or no, when you have a tall receiver matched with shorter defenders, you put it up there and trust your receiver to get it. You can't teach height and length.
If some of you guys were married to Selma Hayek, you'd bitch because she couldn't cook.

Honestly we won't know if LSU is for real until October 7, 2017.

It's crazy that they think sec defenses are NFL caliber.
1st- yes I wish his deep ball was a little more on time
2nd- under thrown balls are caught ever game against every defense in every league. Will a few get intercepted?? Of course, but a few will go for touchdowns as well.
3rd- the defense we play aren't gods. They will not miraculously intercept every under thrown ball.
Tldr: understand the want for on time balls, but Yao are overreacting:

I agree with both your statements with these points: The under throws where to open receivers (not into triple coverage) and while he does get "Happy Feet" he hasn't been running backwards and taking sacks. Both are correctable and his deep ball improved from the first game.

" bitch because she couldn't cook"
I have been on this particular LSU fan forum for almost a decade. LSU fans finding something to bitch about is not really anything new.
When you can bitch about a national championship football season because it had two losses, then you will bitch about anything.

Not really, State has a way better offense and QB than Florida and their defense isn't far behind Florida's

All in all - really happy with his play thus far though...a few balls he's thrown - especially the mid-range, over the shoulder ones have been absolute beauties. Catching his receivers in stride.
A weak athlete though intelligent.

I've actually been impressed with Etlings deep ball. His arm is definitely stronger post surgery. He throws the deep out at elite level

I'll take getting sacked while in max protect for 200

Probably won't be looking deep as much against the heart of the schedule.
We went deep so often Saturday because the #1 recruit in the nation for 2018 (who is a QB) was in the stadium.
Our passing game will look more like it was vs BYU. Lots of swings, screens, crossing routes, and the occasional deep ball to keep defenses honest.
As it should be.
