Typical LSU football team big win one week then a loss to a 3-7 Tulane team

2011? THAT was magical. Beatdowns of Aub, TN, Fla, Oregon, WVa, Bama at their house, etc. Ended in disappointment, but that was the most exciting, most special season I've witnessed, including both 2003 and 2007.

dominate Bama only to lose to Miss State the next week then dominate Florida State then turn around and lose to Tulane

That was a quite memorable November, wasn't it?

Eric Martin had a one-handed catch in the Orange Bowl that was the greatest I ever saw.

Anyone else get goosebumps looking at the pic of 9 Tigers gang tackling Walter Lewis at Mike Anderson's?

He announced his retirement on December 15, 1982. His close friends said he made the decision to "hang it up" on the Sunday morning after the loss to Southern Mississippi on November 13. It was one of only two losses in Bryant-Denny Stadium from 1958-1982. He died of a heart attack on January 29, 1983.

The LSU game at Legion Field was the most dominating performance over an Alabama team I had seen in my lifetime. I saw more when DuBose came along. The funny thing was, after the '82 game, I really thought Stovall would be around in Baton Rouge for a long time.

Sorry, any season that ends with a loss to Tulane should never be categorized as "magical."
It was to me, and most other fans who remember it. Absolutely brilliant season, totally unexpected.
Probably still the best defensive line to come through LSU (and maybe the SEC).
The Dalton/James gang.
Destroying Fla St for the Orange Bowl bid, with fog rising up around Tiger Stadium (it began to roll in later in the game).

That was when Tiger fans were still hungry, before we got fat and arrogant. We praised the wins and hard-fought losses with good opponents back then, we didn't whine about not beating someone "bad enough"

He actually announced it the Wednesday after the LSU. I am sure he knew at this point that he was eaten up with cancer.

Didn't he actually die of a heart attack while undergoing a physical at a doctor's office ?

Our D was dominating given up only 1 1st down for BAMA entire 1st half.

Actually they didn't get any at all until the second half. Here's a screenshot from the game video:

to all saying a freshman running back cannot contribute right off the bat - Fournette. Hoping he lights it up!

I saw most games in 1982 live. Magical moments against bama in Bham and F$U in TS, but any season that features losses to Miss State and Tulane is NOT a magical season.

For me, even after all these years, the Bama game that year is still surprising. One of those wonderful shocks to your system from which you never really recover.

Let's not forget the fearless job Alan Risher did that afternoon either.

Oh, and the Tigers were a 27-point favorite against Tulane that season. That was the last bet I ever made. Evah.

Can someone post a video link of Hilliard trucking the All American Jerimiah Castille in that game at legion field?

My question is: How in the hell did we go from an Orange Bowl team in 82 to a 4-7 team in 83 (0-6 in conference)?

Born in 82 ftr, remember none of this.

The very first season my Dad bought season tickets to LSU games. That is when I became a lifetime fan of LSU football. #21 was and still is one of my all-time favorite LSU players. Eric Martin as well as the LSU defense. Great year to start watching LSU.

Hard to believe Tulane beat LSU 3 out of 4 years from 1979 to 1982.

But 1982 was the last time.

LSU football used to be very Jeckyll and Hyde. We weren't considered "premier", nobody in the SEC other than Alabama was then. We'd have good seasons mixed with bad, depending on the players involved.

The QB, Alan Risher, was a senior in '82, as was a lot of the defense. So while Jeff Wickersham, the next QB, had a better arm, he made more mistakes and less room for error due to the depleted defense.
Stovall, the coach, wasn't the best either. He was a last second fill-in for Bo Rein (died in a plane crash), was out of his league as a major college coach. Arnsparger came in and solidified LSU as a consistent program while he was here.

some instersting stuff from that year, I know it well, so I will ramble a bit...

held ole miss to -45 yards rushing for the game (still LSU record), think about that -45...

MSU team was NOT bad that year and year before was a bowl team, tough loss, but not a total shock,

but tulane we were 27 pt favorite- I am pretty sure that is biggest upset ever for LSU team..-for perspective in 93 whne terrible lsu won at bama to end thier 23? game win streak we were +25

VS TN we had a missed fg that IMHO was good, and Dalton Hillaird had a VERY rare fumble in q4 that cost us, but that TN team was very good

As others have said Bama game we DOMINATED and broke 12 game losing streak to tide

At UF was not as close as score, they scored late TD +2pt conversion and we were up 24-5 at half, it was all about our D that game (O was good as well) as we held them on 4 4th and ones or less and they had a GRRAT RB combo, Neal Ansderson and another guy

Both losses (Tulane and MSU) were on the defense, rumor after Tulane was P Jenkins was paid off to throw game (the D calls vs Tulane appaeared to always be wrong)- but know that it is bs, we just got beat

I am pretty sure we lost the coin toss in every game we won and won it in all 3 losses!

We played Neb tough, but they were clearly better team, they had a 4 TO's in first half or we would have lost by 10 or so.

FSU had 6 TO's, now some were forced for sure and we deserved to win the game, but 55-21 was partially result of TO's

Tn missed long fg (55?) at buzzer to beat us, kicker was Ruiz and just missed it, Risher actually ran for a long TD (20+ yards) in the game, but we could NOT stop thier short passing game (Gault) and Tulane did same thing to us

IMHO Stovall lost the job in 83 becuase he (and others) gave so much credit to mack Brown for 82 season (he was QB coach and Risher was great that year), so when MB left in we went 4-7 in 83 Stovall got quick hook- for many reasons (some good, some not) but one was that mack Brown was thought by many to get lots of credit for 82...

one reason for big letdown vs Tulane was BEFORE FSU game it was already decided that winner of lsu/fsu was Orange, loser was Gator bound- our bowl bid was sealed

It was IMHO one of best teams we have had and was 11 points from perfect season, HOWEVER, there was next to no chance we would have won NC even if we went 11-0- UGA (won SEC for third year in row, Walker won Hesimen they had won 1980 NC was always higher rated than us AND went 11-0, no way sugar takes us- PSU beat UGA to end 11-1 so maybe we could have won it if we beat Nebraska, but SMU was 10-0-1 and likey would have also been considered. And again, we were fortunate to be close to huskers,

We tried to hide our oranges entering the stadium, but most were just carrying in those meshy 10 lb bags. No problem !

Of course when that turned into such a mess, they decided to crack down the following week for the expected blowout vs Tulane by painting the Orange Bowl logo face on the 50.
