Pulling players from Cali and up north. Lot of RHPs too. Only 3 LHPs I can see. Not including portal stuff, just commits. I haven’t looked into the out of area players yet, just the Texas and LA commits thus far. Are we seeing a drop in local talent or are the ball players going elsewhere? Why so heavy in Cali? This is just my opinion, but Texas & LA should be hit harder than the West Coast.

our HC is from out there and recruits the area well. but i do think you're onto something with LA/TX needing to be recruited harder

This is just my opinion, but for some reason it seems like players from northern states bust more often than other locations. The data may not support that, but it just seems that way… take Kling for instance. Hopefully, Cam Johnson will come along and rewrite that narrative.

Skenes was from CA, along with Jump, so it’s hard to bash that state.

Crews and Tanks are from FL, which has a ton of baseball talent.

I agree that we should focus more on LA and TX.

You have to go all the way back to the 2019 class to find more than 6 players from Louisiana in a single class.

Over the past 8 years or so, we've been averaging roughly 5 Louisiana players per class.

We have no idea how this class will look once draft is over
then it comes down to the portal to fill out the roster
he is bringing in several jucos as well which will be needed for more experienced players

Yeah hard to bash two great players when you have hundreds of recruits from there. You can’t judge it on just two players.

There are 17 players from Louisiana and Texas in those classes and 11 from California.

My count is 13 not counting JUCO. This is mainly about high school recruiting.

This is baseball, not football. That number seems about where you'd expect it to be.

My theory on the lack of LA players lately:

Prior to NIL, we had 11.7 scholarships that had to be spread out throughout the team. With the TOPS program, instate guys got prioritized because we didn't have to give them a scholarship. TOPS paid their way.

Since NIL, we can now use NIL funds to pay tuition for players so we can take higher ranked national players rather than filling the class with more LA players. The pro is that we technically have higher ceiling guys. The con is that we don't have as many gritty LA guys like Gavin Dugas or Cade Beloso.

Didn’t the use of tops end in the 2000s? I may be wrong.

The real problem is these guys tend to take 3-5 years to make a real impact. With the portal, guys don't need to wait around anymore to get their shot. Then, even if they're willing to wait, you can't just keep them on the roster for 4 years if some stud transfer needs a roster spot.

You'll likely still have a couple, but gone are the days of low ranked guys waiting in the wings for 3 years before they turn into 22 year old all conference players.

1. California, Texas, Florida, and Georgia have the most talent because of the organizations coming up.

2. Jay is a west coast guy with plenty ties to that area. Being the talent that way is usually really good you can see why he would recruit hard that way.

3. I do think the talent in Louisiana lately has not been as good as the past. However, I think you will see that change in the near future. They have some really good talent coming up right now in Louisiana.

Take a look at the amount of Louisiana guys that transferred out of LSU in the past 3 years and ask yourself if you would want them on this LSU team. That should answer your question on the Louisiana talent because those guys were some of the top guys in the state.

Josh Stevenson, Will Safford, Collier Cranford, Brody Drost, Brennan Holt.....just to name a few.

Also look at the Louisiana players that actually still are on the roster and the talent level of those guys. Not trying to bash anyone but the Louisiana talent level in baseball hasn't been the greatest recently.

I would argue in most years there's only 3-5 LA kids even worth taking. We shouldnt really be taking 6-7 LA kids year to year or almost ever really. Maybe once, twice in a 10 year span.

Jay has good connections from out West and clearly is using that.

Talent accumulation isnt really a problem

Yea it’s making the odds of my son playing for LSU less and less. He’s one, but he’s throwing hard from the left side. Some control issues, but I plan on fixing that.

Agreed. Just letting the OP know this isn't unusual.

Does it really matter where these kids are from any more? Out of state guys that LSU is looking at all play in national tournaments and in games against high level players from all over. All of these kids are playing a ton of games with a ton of available data points.

This is about identifying talent that can be developed it doesn't matter where they are from. With that said you want Louisiana guys who want to play at LSU who can develop.

The old model is dead. It ain't coming back. Players won't be signed to be developed as starters by their 3rd year. The big schools want immediate impact players only. A few of those might be 1st year players and many will be portal guys who another team already developed and are more physically developed when step foot on Lsu soil.
