Is this a real story? I heard about this for the first time on the radio this morning. According to the radio story Mack decommitted after filing for the trademark but recommitted once the trademark was temporarily awarded to the Mack family. This is some creative shite to pay recruits.

Here is the LINK.

trademark. not patent. Please update OP so as not to confuse anyone.

and yes, it's very shady.

And honestly, I'm surprised he was granted a trademark. Getting a trademark for a slogan is very difficult.

Here's the USPTO filing

What really is the difference between this and the purple and gold BugaNation shirts that were being sold by the Fournettes?

This will not end well for the Ags.

well, LSU did not promote BUGA.

What TAMU did here was promote #WRTS via social media. Then didn't oppose the trademark filing when Mack filed for it (very unlike TAMU).

It's really an incredible way to help out a recruits family.

IMO, nothing will come from it.

It's hard to make a case against this. No proven monetary value. No evidence that TAMU purposefully helped promote the brand.

Yeah. I didn't necessarily mean due to this specific issue. I am thinking more in terms of the trend that has been set with that program. It will bite them in the arse at some point, either directly or indirectly IMO.

honestly, I'm just more astonished he was given the trademark considering how often 'we run this state' has been used in the past by other schools.

A&M only promoted it prior to the kid hijacking it and filing for the trademark. Then they didn't fight it. Did you expect A&M to actually fight the trademark of prospective recruit?

IMO, this is much ado about nothing. It would only be an issue if they continued using the hashtag to promote it.

no, I didn't.

but they continued to promote it after he filed for the trademark application. And, if TAMU wanted to, they could still oppose the mark.

IMO, I don't really care. The mark really isn't worth much without that TAMU logo next to it and the school pushing it.

I think this is going to be something the NCAA has a problem with. Jeremy Bloom was not allowed to earn income from endorsements for his skiing exploits and maintain his eligibility to play football for the University of Colorado. But then the O'Bannon case has to be taken into consideration too. so who knows what the NCAA will do.

So let me get this straight, if aTm continues to promote it, they can PAY his family for its use?

They will not continue to promote. They have separated themselves from the mark.

Which, imo, makes it almost useless.

The school has already distanced itself from the hashtag. Which is weird since they hold numerous trademarks. The thing is that there are still stores selling WRTS shirts with aTm on it

I don't know the answer to this, but if they can the NCAA better step in quick. it's just a circumvention of the rules, much like the cam newton thing where cam's dad was paid (w/o cam's knowledge, of course )

Hopefully it works out like their last trademark.
