quote:

In all, they brought in one of the best classes ever by a first-year head coach, ranking seventh nationally. And, oh yeah, it includes Taylor, too. He’s only ranked as the 11th-best inside linebacker in the class and a guy who Georgia, Auburn and Oklahoma were fighting for to the very end.

In the coaching staff’s mind, Taylor isn’t some sleeper. Just look at what Orgeron shouted while watching Taylor's announcement on signing day: "Next Kendell Beckwith right there!” he yelled from LSU's war room.

Later in an interview, Orgeron and Aranda compared Taylor’s skills to the Tigers’ former three-year starting middle linebacker. “Smooth is a word that immediately comes to mind when you watch him play,” Aranda said. “The game plays naturally for him. You watch him on tape and he plays smooth. When you watch Beck’s tape, it’s the same way.”

Taylor will see the field sooner since he doesn't have to compete with all-world LB DJ Welter

Chavis tried to groom him as a DE when he was a true freshman, because he needed the depth.

Also, someone, either Miles or Chavis, had a love affair with Welter until it became blatantly obvious at the end of 2014 that Welter shouldn't have even been on scholarship to play college football in DII, and Beckwith got the start at the end of his sophomore year.

Don't think he has Becks speed, but he's a more natural LB.

The thread's about comparing Tyler to Beckwith, not excising your hate-fetish for Welter. Move on with your life, bro.

And if you payed attention to the plays where he had his hand on the ground, he wrecked shite.

It was more about Beckwith being in the right places. Sure, Welter looked a bit out manned at times, but he knew where to be when. Beckwith was making costly errors for a while. Once he got it down, well, he played.

I'm not sure how you can say a country boy like Beckwith isn't as natural as you can get. He was coached up at DE initially then gets into the LB spot and tears it up. Plus, Taylor hasn't even played a snap of next level ball. I think this is more of the excitement around new recruits that haven't proven themselves yet.

Taylor has a huge wingspan which will be great for batting balls and reaching out and grabbing backs. He may not have the straightline speed that KB has but his change of direction and footbal iq is really strong along with good technique. He's gonna be a good one.

I'm not sure you understood the intention of my post. I never said Beck wasn't a great player.

He's a better athlete than Taylor all around, but he was a DE at first and was more of an athlete playing football than anything else coming out of HS. He has developed into a great MLB and I think he'll be a very good pro if he heals well.

I'll never forget Beckwith in the UA game in HS chasing down a 5* running back from sideline to sideline from behind. I was sold then. Taylor is just more polished at the position at this point in their careers.

And I'm not sure what country boy has to do with anything.

Why can't people resist bringing up this guy's name everytime there is a thread about linebackers?

Time for some new material

I guess the post could have said he should be better than Welter by end of his freshman year

This guy Taylor and Phillips will see the field in year 1 IMO and possibly take over toward the end of the year, possibly. Depends how they both adjust but I think they will both adjust very well. Both are heady players that just tackle, it will be hard to keep them off the field.

Many have forgotten what an athlete Beckwith was.

Dude played QB & DE in HS.

He was a QB and DE in high school. It took time for him to adapt to LB in college. That's not an insult, it's a fact. He wasn't ready to step immediately because he wasn't a natural LB coming in. He was groomed to it.
