I'm in a similar boat as Kelly in regards to not getting into bidding wars for recruits but...

Why not make an offer quite a bit larger than recruit's current offer contigent on it coming directly with a faxed signed commitment(whatever its called)?

This is why we lost out on Ricks bc it was "too late" to counter.

Not harping on staff/team, just curious why this isn't being implemented. Bama is and has obviously been doing this successfully for a while hence the "swooping" in last minute to land these blue chips.

If you are dealing with somebody looking to sell his services to the highest bidder, it's not "too late" until the contract is executed.

LSU needs to offer Ricks 20 million and dare Bama to counter. Thwn when they don’t you call Saban on the phone laughing and tell him he’s a bitch.
