Official visits the School picks up the bill for everything. Unofficial is on the family's dime. A recruit can only have I think 5 officials, and as many unofficials as they can afford(or get by NCAA on schools dime).

Official = school pays expenses...
Unofficial = recruit/family pays their own way...

Yep, the guys above answered your question correctly. I have heard of visits of high interest targets that were technically unofficial, but the NCAA rules were circumvented by someone other than a school rep or booster funneling the necessary funds to someone associated, but not related, to the target. So, in essence, if they want you to come, money won't be a factor.

There is much more of a difference than that. There are a couple threads on this board that explain the differences. Jimmy Detail and a poster - I think is JJ27, who went on an unofficial to TCU - explain the differences.
