At the risk of incurring the scorn of those here who ridicule anyone who does not know how many official visits Red Grange took between the wars, here goes:

1. Why do recruits take official visits after they have verbally committed, or put another way, why commit when you still want to take official visits. Is it just the hope that a "hostess" will provide a blow job or seeing if some program will part with some cash?

2. Why the spectacle on NSD that some do of sitting at a press conference and announcing your selection like waiting to see who wins Best Picture at the Oscars? Do these kids, who have been told all their sports career that they are special, need this extra ego gratification or is something else involved? I gather from some here that the McKnight foolishness was Curtis wanting to stick it to LSU.

3. I saw how silly McKnight handled his announcement and compare that to the Shephard kid from Texas who announces and then acts proud of his choice. Is Randle going to do the hat thing? Does any school ever tell some of the prima donnas that we will fill the class before NSD?

Thanks for any info and opinions

I'll take a crack at this, though I'm no expert.

1. Recruits take officials after they have verbally committed because they can, it's free and they often get the royal treatment. It's partly a reward for their hard work and blessed athletic talent. I think also that some commit and then think wellllll hell I wanna just be absolutely sure so they gather all of the information you can. It's a huge decision and it's good to erase all shreds of doubt about that committment.

2. The spectacle I think is a reward for the hard work and talent as well. They've earned it and they wanna feel important. It's a big day in their lives and it's a celebration of sorts. Almost like graduation day at any high school. It's a time to celebrate what you've done and do it in the public eye. It's not always ego gratification though it sometimes is. I think it's mostly just a reward. I also think that recruiting services, especially the bowl games approach them about making the spectacle announcements to boost the hoopla around recruiting. If everything is quiet and under the radar it's not as exciting and doesn't generate as much interest. I also wonder if schools play a part in this as well, sort of a public "look at the talent we're bringin in and watch this guys that havent' committed, you can play with this guy."

McKnight didn't handle it as silly as many. Most figured he was going to USC I think. He was just close to the vest a bit on his process. Randle is not going to do the hat thing according to his brother.

Hope this answers some of your thoughts. I'm no expert but I do follow it pretty close and this is some of what I have come up with in my time.

frankly, I think a lot of these kids are just plain impulsive...they commit before they have done all of their research and later are convinced that they should at least take their three official visits.....

as for the "big-reveal" type of announcements, I think you are spot on....kids that do this are really just enjoying the attention (I'm sure mom and dad get at least a little pleasure as well)....lets face it, there is not really a valid reason for a 17 year old to need to call a press conference to tell everyone where he will attend school....
