The NCAA transfer portal has resulted in massive changes to how college football programs operate on an annual basis. But this year might have been its most impactful season yet.

According to On3 Sports, over 2,000 FBS football players have entered the NCAA transfer portal during the current cycle. This cycle has seen a number of prized quarterbacks and former five-star prospect seek out new teams.
Among the players to transfer are former five star defensive lineman Walter Nolen from Texas A&M to Ole Miss, quarterback Aidan Chiles from Oregon State to Michigan State and quarterback Dante Moore from UCLA to Oregon.

There are still a number of big name players that are in the transfer portal though. Former five-star wide receiver Evan Stewart and Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward are just two of them.

Football fans are mixed on whether this is a good thing or not:

"Glad they have this option, but man, that number is too high. No way that 2,000 guys all land in a good spot, or even in a spot at all," one user replied.

"The Wild West," wrote another.

"Ridiculous," a third said bluntly.

Has the transfer portal been a net positive or a net negative for college football?

Clearly been a net negative for the fans

For the players, I guess you can maximize your value if you play your cards right

It’s definitely not as fun. Part of what I loved about college was watching a player grow from high school senior to college player.

Now I just see 50 new faces every year, and expect it to repeat

It will end up destroying college football. And those who were/are involved in it will deserve it.

It's just free agency and bidness decisions all over the place. To me CFB has drifted away from what separated it from the NFL and attracted me to it.

Committing to a school meant something. There was a reason a guy wanted to play there. There was a Pride in playing for the school you chose. The rivalries meant something. Now a guy may be playing for the hated rival next year without a 2nd thought. It's just starred to feel like a soulless product with hired guns to the highest bidders.

And only about 30-40 of them are worthy of LSU or the SEC

A net negative for the players. Half those transfers won’t find a home and will be out of football, and school, 6 months from now.

And they will deserve it. Life experience is mother fricker but it teaches valuable lessons.

How many of them are there due to being told they did not have a future at their current school? As fans, we only care about the ones that are hurting the depth of our own team. 80% of the portal is made up of players who were never going to see the field for a P5 team.

If the schools didn't like the idea of a portal, it wouldn't exist. This is not an NIL scenario where the US Supreme Court made it happen. This is purely an NCAA mandate brought about by the member schools. The kids are only playing the hand they were dealt.

If not last year the year before, there were over 1000 portal transfers who ended up with no offers. Having given up their scholarships, their former schools did not reoffer them either, their scholarships given to other players, old & new.

Coaches will tell you this started out good, everything added, has taken a more negative look.

Kelly would rather build from the high school, he’s doing it the right way. The portal has helped with the Louisiana kids. Some that might have been passed over by the previous staff. Kelly in this class, has kept almost 70% Louisiana players.

No doubt. One of them being, everyone has a boss and in just about every scenario, every check you ever cash was signed by someone you answered too.

I personally know many college fans that have checked out. I myself won’t watch any game not involving LSU at this point. That’s not a good sign for the long term outlook of the sport.

I doubt there are 800 to 1000 possible scholarships available. A bunch of them are done

I'm much less interested in CFB than I used to be and it makes me sad. It's very hard to get invested in a team, player, program when you know there's a good likelihood they are going to be gone at the drop of a hat. There's absolutely zero loyalty with many of these guys and while I understand some of it, this has been a huge net negative for everyone except for the players' bank accounts

The most fun thing about CFB was always the pride players had for their school and the chance to watch a young man grow and develop. I still watch LSU games but have found myself far less invested in the overall product as well as the Tigers. The latest ruling with unlimited transfers will likely be the tipping point at which this model becomes unsustainable to keep eyes on the product

It’s the VERY reason I quit watching the NFL. When free agency started I couldn’t identify with a team anymore. I could always count on Randy White, Harvey Martin, Ed Too Tall Jones and Bill Bates terrorizing offenses. Then when lineups changed every year I lost interest. Sad.
