Excuse me for the somewhat stupid question. Looks like no one could beat us out for the top spot considering who we have left on the table.
This class will be insane.

Pretty strong chance
Alabama getting Little and Lawrence will obviously hurt that, but it's looking like that won't happen

I think this class almost cannot finish lower than 3rd. I would say we will finish with the #1 or #2 consensus class when the dust settles - barring a major calamity. I do not know how a coaching change would affect this. The offensive staff seems fairly stable. It is possible someone could poach Orgeron for a DC/RC spot - and that would be huge - but I think he may be settling his family in Louisiana and he's getting too old to rip his shirt off and run through walls.
Peveto could go, maybe, but I'm not sure how that affects recruiting.
But, when you consider how well we're doing at the very top of the blue chip board - honestly, I'm not even sure 2003 can match what we expect for 2016. And Miles has been no slouch, either - 2006, 2007, 2009 through 2011, as well as 2013 through 2015 were stellar classes, some of the best in LSU history.
Really, Miles' only off classes were 2005, 2008 and 2012 - 2005 was the partial year as he was incoming, 2012 was ranked lowly on signing day, but I believe that class has overachieved on the field. 2008 was a mediocre (for LSU) class on paper - coupled with a larger than usual number of misses - that is really Miles only failing grade from me for his recruiting classes at LSU - and that class, as seniors, went undefeated in the regular season and played for the BCS title - so there's that.

with this staff, who is committed and what we're hearing to date, I expect #1
LSU is about to go on a Nasty run before Miles retires

I think we have a good shot. The guys we are likely to get should keep us ahead of Bama, but I admittedly don't know much about tOSU's recruiting situation so they could get it.

shea just posted a projected class on 247 and it would arguably be the best class ever assembled. it would have 7 possible five stars (a new record), 10 of the top 50 (9 of which are on defense), and 14 of the top 100. and based on the way things are spread out, there could be an entire starting defense assembled just from top 100 prospects in this class

His list was pretty optimistic. No way we sign all those guys, and he admitted a few were just gut feelings.
To the OP, if we sign Gary its a lock. If we don't sign Gary its slightly less of a lock but still has a locky feel to it. This class is gonna be a monster.

We are about to lose Kareem Walker, so we won't be standing in your way.

Looks like we are pretty much exclusively in on 4 and 5 star players left, including SEVERAL 5-stars and Top 100 type guys.
I'm not sure how tOSU is looking to finish but this is the list of guys we have at least a decent shot at that are in the Top 250:
#1 overall 5-star DT Rahaun Gary
#2 overall 5-star OT Greg Little
#8 overall 5-star DT Shavar Manuel
#13 overall 5-star LB Lynell Wilson
#16 overall 5-star LB Ben Davis
#23 overall 5-star DT Rashard Lawrence
#33 overall 4-star CB Trayvon Mullen
#42 overall 4-star CB Kristian Fulton
#49 overall 4-star S Deontay Anderson
#68 overall 4-star LB Rahshaun Smith
#70 overall 4-star OT Willie Allen
#75 overall 4-star LB Jeffrey McCullough
#79 overall 4-star LB Keion Joyner
#90 overall 4-star ATH Devin White
#104 overall 4-star WR Stephen Sullivan
#116 overall 4-star LB Dontavious Jackson
#154 overall 4-star WR Drake Davis
#210 overall 4-star WR Mykel Jones
I think we can definitely finish out with 8 of the above.

i feel like Gary was the only name there that was a reach, the rest seemed much more likely than not imo. even without Gary we'd have Rashard Lawrence (number 23 overall) and Edwin Alexander (28) at DT, and Shavar Manuel (8) if he stays at DT and doesnt move to DE.
thats 3 five star DTs, 4 with Gary.
good luck running up the middle, SEC.

Yeah I think 3 to 4 five star DTs is the issue. We have a legit shot at Gary but I think if he does come here that makes it easier for other coaches to bring up how crowded that depth chart will be and play the "you're our #1 DT target" card. There was talk of selling a couple of them on a hybrid DE role, so maybe that's the trump. I hope I'm wrong, I just don't see us being able to grab 4 five star players to fill two spots on the field in the same class. If it happens I'll buy O a truck of redbull.

Gary we are telling can play anywhere on our DL, which he absolutely can.
Next year the DL should have 3 seniors on it in Bower, Neal and LaCouture.
