The 1st safeties of the last 2 NFL drafts both went 4th in the 2nd round, #s 36 overall. It’s just not that valuable of a position, relatively, in today’s football. I would have loved Matthews, but we signed 3 FR safeties last year and got Major Burns in a transfer. Of course we want all the 5-stars from Louisiana to come to LSU, but I don’t think safety is the position we want to set the precedent of getting into an 11th hour bidding war for.

They are more important than ever. LSU will play 3 at a time, 60% of the time under the new DC

Regardless of how many we play at a time, players who can both cover and play the run are at a premium in modern football.

That seems odd

Right.

Jacoby was a priority for a reason.

Good thing is you can get a good safety out of the portal.

Not many elite linebackers who can rush and cover will hot the portal.

You may be right, but isn’t that more semantics? You’re including NBs, right? Which can be corners as much as safeties. And “safeties” are a lot of times tweeners like Jacoby Stevens who are really smaller LBs. Those 3 at a time may be “safeties,” but isn’t it just smaller LBers, bigger CBs, and typical safeties all vying for those 3 spots? I’m not saying Matthews isn’t the prototype and won’t be on the field at A&M for 90% of their plays, just that you can find those best 3 guys from other positions they were recruited as besides “safety?”

3 safeties? That’s pretty common these days because of the spread. especially of you have capable guys

I think Matthew’s is a LB but safeties are still important. LSU has had bad safety play recently & it reflects the whole defense

I didn’t say they weren’t important, just that the 3 you allude to with those skill-sets don’t have to come from the typical “safety” designation.

Well to be fair they generally are “safeties”. Guys that can tackle in space & cover

Right. Its called "Big Nickel. Traditional nickel has 4 Linemen with 2 LBs, 3 CBs and 2 safeties. Instead of having 3 CBs you have 3 safeties in the Big nickel... one of which can cover.

The Saints have been using it for a while especially since CJ Gardner-Johnson was drafted.

Sage Ryan may serve as the "slot safety" since he has decent coverage skills.

Jacoby is an LB. He would make for a very poor sec safety

Yap. KC uses Badger, Thornhill & Sorensen on the field together a ton.

Even more so last year in the SB year

I assume House will take some of these adaptations with him to lsu

Ok? I went back to the 2019 draft, and the 1st “safety” drafted was #27 in the 1st round, Johnathan Abram from Mississippi State. But he was designated as a SS, which I don’t remember them splitting between SS and FS. For example, the next safety taken that draft was Marquise Blair by the Seahawks in the 2nd round at #47 overall, but he was listed as just a “S.”

Speaking of Seattle, I’d imagine they regret giving up all those picks for Jamal Adams, one of the last safeties picked top 5. And I absolutely LOVE Jamal Adams, but he probably didn’t offer the Jets the on-field value of where they took him nor the Seahawks for how much they gave up for him.

I’m not dogging safeties or saying they provide no value, but I think it’s clear they’re behind QB, OT, OG, WRs, Rush end whether that’s a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, Will or Mile LBs that can play the run and cover, and CBs in no real particular order after QB. Probably DTs, too. There may be a freak safety every few years who goes top 5, but overall, their value—at least to NFL teams—is trending downward. They don’t seem to affect the game as much as other positions.
