While good college pitching coaches can improve the mechanics and consistency of a pitcher, can a coach realistically improve the fast ball velocity of a pitcher? OR do coaches simply rely on the natural ability of each pitcher to throw 90+ mph?

Nature versus Nurture?

Velocity has a lot to do with mechanics, so yes.

It may help if they had them neutered but I don't think the player or family would go for it.

The nuture is unknown and no one knows what will happen.

It's a combination of both. Without the right genetic makeup, you don't have a chance. Without the right work ethic, and access to high level coaching, you'll never hit your ceiling.

YES. pitch speed is based on arm strength which is both natural and built up with certain drills (long toss mostly) and maturity of the body as well as lower body strength. it's also based on technique. think of a lever with key parts being the shoulder, elbow and wrist. much like a golf swing all three "joints" move in concert as the pitchers lower body propels him off of the mound toward the batter. there are other aspects of "technique", such as the balance point, etc, but that's the gist of it.

This right here. Coaching helps but fans often misinterpret what that means. Natural ability and work ethic are by the more important pieces,
