When Kevin Faulk was recruited, Curley was out, Gerry was in. Gerry's first stop was to see Kevin in Carencro. This is partly true. A coach from the previous staff went in and talked with Kevin. Hes the one that sold Kevin on keeping his commitment. Gerry was an afterthought. When Kevin backed off LSU, A&M sent in a few people to Carencro, Mike Sherman (Yes their HC now). There was a big push to sway him West.

Another recruiting story involved the first LSU Football player to declare for the NFL his Jr. year. He had given a verbal to Fla. St. after a visit (LSU was never quite in the picture), with help from a few locals and a former LSU Player, this player started to open up to LSU. He committed to LSU on a conference call with LSU and A&M listening on the other ends.

Athlons College Preview has a section called "Recruiting Was Stories," you won't find these in there....
Thought some would enjoy.....

Boo Kennison I take it...I remember him saying he dropped FSU because they didn't remember the high school he went to or misspoke about it or something to that effect.

Faulk and Kennison were both huge gets for LSU when reeling in top 10 classes were not the norm.

Yep, I was at a Tx. high school practice a couple years back. On the team was a kid with the last name of Thibodeaux, come to find out, he was Boo's cousin.

I don't remember Faulk backing off. He wasn't committed anywhere when Dinardo was hired, and he committed to LSU some time after that.

ETA: And which class was Kennison in? 92 right?

The coach had followed him starting when Kevin was in the 9th grade. It was known that LSU had the upper hand. It wasn't till the staff change that the feeding frenzy hit. If you ever talk with Kevin, ask him about the coach that called him "Hoss."
He'll tell you.

Yeah they were also part of the 92 class mentioned above. Anyone else remember the 5, where they were from, and where they finished their career?

Robert Toomer, GA
Robert Davis, AL
Artie Moore, MS
Jay Johnson, TX
David Butler, LA

They all had their moments, but none were elite. Moore probably had the least impact.

I started following LSU recruiting closely in '90 and I remember being caught up in the hype of '92 class that was ranked #1 by Emfinger. Overall, it was a great class talent wise, but the coaching was awful. Jamie HowRd was also in this class I believe.

'92 class was Hallman's best at LSU IMO. Also had future NFLers Tory James, David LaFleur, Gabe Northern, Ben Bordelon, and Kennison.

Yeah, Davis had a great freshman year then ended up...at UAB maybe? Johnson had a good year the second year then ended up at Grambling. The only thing I remember Moore doing was having a big run on a fake FG against ole miss....and then ending up at ole miss. Butler had injuries and I believe finished his career as a safety. Toomer was the only one that finished as a RB, but had fallen behind Faulk and Cleveland as a senior. Johnson and Toomer had good games at Bama in 93.

Its funny how people think lsu football started with saban. What i would give to have a guy like faulk on the team now.

Some seem to forget that the team Hal Hunter coached beat a team ranked #11, a team going to the SECCG. Beat them bad, by 25 pts. and it could have been worse.

did not know that. IMO the most talented of the group but got in some kind of trouble.Toomer was a good football player. Davis did go to UAB but I do not think he ever played. None of them should have taken carries away from Odell Beckham who was not one of Curley's boys. Brings back memories

I was thinking Beckham had already graduated. I remember him as a '90-91 guy. You may be right though.

I remember Robert Davis got lions share of carries to open '92 season against A&M in Tiger Stadium. It was hot as all get out that day and Davis rushed for around 100 yards in a losing effort. He had a long run that game, but didn't have the speed to house it.

he ran about eighty yards(he was about 180 pounds if he was wet) and everybody in the secondary (and also the linebackers) caught him. I thought "Oh shite"

Robert Toomer was my HS PE coach over at Jesuit. Very nice guy. No idea where he is these days, but pretty cool that he played at LSU and was part of that fab 5.

Yep, and the run was off of an option pitch when we were backed up toward our own endzone. We had season tickets in the northeast endzone and the play unfolded right in front of me. Option pitch to the left. Trivia: which QB made the pitch? He later scored the TD on that drive. He was one of 4 QBs that saw time that year (and we think we have it bad now )

Yep. Howard, Loup, Daigle, and Huffman all saw meaningful snaps.
