So, why do we always need LBs and OTs?

We used to not really recruit strict OTs, we're getting a lot better here under Grimes though. Stud seemed to only bring in more interior OL and hope one of those guys could go out and play LT eventually. Grimes is going out trying to get guys like Deculus, Savage, Okeke & Brown Jr. who are a little more your "OT" types, problem is he was dealt with what he was dealt with and these young guys wont really be contributors right away, especially on the OL.

At LB Chavis just seemed to not care, and it didnt seem like we had great things in place to pick up the slack. We lack LBs simply because they tried to sign guys and seemed to always fall short by 1-2 bodies looking back and on top of that we lost a few guys they thought we could count on (Garrett). You will be very happy with this year's class, they are going all out to sign 4 or 5 guys and some really good ones at that. they could have settled for a few guys already (Fagan) but they decided not to because they feel confident in pull guys the level of Moses, Allen, Chaisson, Jones, etc...The LB class that just came in was probably our best we've signed in MANY years, only drawback seems to be Anthony not getting cleared by the NCAA.

Yep Beck was a dual threat in highschool mstly I thnk he played lb sme.he was offically listed as a olb whn he played at the army all American game, and he got switched to de when he got to lsu.Chavis didn't start beck at lb because Dj Welter had more exp even though every one knew beck was better. To be honest before Beck I think Kwon Alexander was our best in the last 4 years then after him I say Debo Jones(just got drafted). And I think the fact that like some else was saying is that we never really seemed to recruit strng at the position for some reason...but like you say we will be strong there whn we get the experience and as long as we stay healthy.

The last few yrs there has been so much depth in the state of louisiana, that for most part we stayed here for recruits. Problem is, in la, there is not many big time OTS except cam rob and no big time LBS except for kenny young and deven white. If we had those 2 right now, we'd have no issue.

WOW! Really? smh

That thinking is what kept Beckwith off the field too long. Being super athletic and intelligent are not mutually exclusive. Even though there are some who believe or want to believe that to be the case.

I dont think this is the same scenario though.

2 things: We now have Dave Aranda running the show. He puts his players in position to succeed according to their skillset, not just what fits his system.

Garnett is already more physically developed than Welter ever was. I played the kid to be a slow, smart, LB but he does have decent athleticism.

Like I said, Aranda obviously liked the kid. And the kid must think he will have a shot at playing to pass on full ride offers from other D1 schools. Dont be suprised when you hear his name making noise next spring.

We recruit based on need.

Yep. This is what poorly run recruiting teams do. Saban recruits on needs, also, but his needs are exactly the same every friggin year. Each year you should recruit:

1 QB
2 RB
4 OL
3 WR
1 TE
3 DL
4 LB
5 DB
2 Best players left and kickers

It's not that simple because of early departures to the NFL and transfers. No numbers can be set in stone like that. The numbers variably change each year.

Have we missed on a lot of guys in the past or just not signed near the number of LB prospects we should've?

chavis, lack of linebacker prospects in state, and lazy recruiting caused most of this.

Things change, you have transfers in and out, NFL departures and injuries. You cant just recruit exactly the same every season. We had 4 WRs transfer out since last season. We lost like 6-8 guys early to the NFL a few years vs. 1-2 other years. We've gotten hit hard at LB this year with injuries, and the NCAA clearinghouse with Anthony. Things are ALWAYS fluid in recruiting.

And no, Saban doesnt recruit exactly the same like that every single year. He fills needs. Just like we try and fill needs.

Moses will lead us to the promised land, and you will forget all about the lazy arse non-recruiting of the Chavis era.

Chavis and Brick Haley did a piss poor job. Coach O trying to repair the damage but it takes time.

Not for Saban. But maybe the rant knows better than him.

It doesn't matter who is departing early. If you haven't prepared for that the last couple of years it's too late. Every now and then you'll find yourself in a bind at a position. In that case you make up for it with a juco or play a fredhman and hope for the best.

You mean to tell me that if I were to pull up the past 5 years at Alabama, he would have the same exact numbers as you stated above for each position?

Cmon man put the pipe down.

Yes. That's what I mean to tell you. Go look. I've done it for years. Remember that the numbers I quoted don't quite add up to a full class. So Saban will have extras at some positions. Take into account that he might only have three linebackers, but he has a 6'-2" 225 lb "athlete" committed.

The way he does it is like this: Let's say he's going to recruit a minimum of four offensive linemen. Half way through the recruiting cycle he has four. Maybe only three are publically committed, but he has his worst case oline class in the bag. He keeps recruiting the best guys, and as they commit he processes the good-but-not-great guys he had in the bag. That's how we got Andy Dodd, btw.

Yea I honestly think getting Beck was a good sign of change, because if u notice, every team that has a championship has had good to elite lb play.To me Beck is in that category just wished him and Kwon Alexander woulda ben on the field at lb at lsu at the same time. The freshman lb here now will have a chip on their shoulder especially Andre Anthony.

We've been terrible at getting depth at linebackers either through recruiting or delevolping.

Oh, frick right off with that.

Steve Spurrier said he retired because he realized that cfb is about recruiting the players, that college coaches can no longer out-coach with X's and O's. Saban gets by only on the reputation that people have built up with their god-coach praise of him. So, all of you artards go on recruiting boards—which recruits read—and talk him up as being some sort of god-coach. And he isn't. He's more a beneficiary of the praise heaped upon him. Exhibit A: had two stellar seasons at LSU, and several mediocre seasons. Exhibit B: that praise led to his getting unprecedented control over an NFL team, where he couldn't get by on reputation alone, and floundered out of the league in a season and a half. So, he goes to one of the two or three college schools with reputations as big as his, and has a decent but not great season...until his and bama's bullshite echo chamber reputations can score them the recruiting pick of the litter. Then, he's successful again, despite several seasons of par results, and everyone's back on the saban/bama bandwagon.

Chavis was an absolutely shite recruiter. Good coach, but leaves the cupboard completely bare. LSU recruited as well as we did while he was here because of miles and frank, which is not disputable. Now, with Aranda, we've got a young, talented, innovative rising star who calls games that LB's will want to be a part of. Combined with O's gangbusters recruiting, we've got a very strong thing going. The defensive recruiting is even better now and the results are gonna show on the scoreboard.
