How many people per year get an offer from Bama? And how many sign? How many get processed? Or gray shirted? Or bumped and their offer pulled?

Nice straw man, there, but you didn't answer my question.

You’re questioning whether all offers are the same? Are they all commitable? What specifically are you asking?

Sometimes offers are a favor to a coach. Sometimes offers are defensive offers to keep kids from other schools. Sometimes offers are placeholders, buying time until another recruit decides one way or another. Sometimes they’re to maintain pipeline recruiting relationships. And sometimes, most of the time, they’re because a coach truly wants that player to play at his school. A player and his family can typically tell the difference. Do you not see this?

It doesn’t have to be bc a kid has his “feelings hurt” bc he’s not getting enough attention and he’s an attention whore. -maybe, just maybe the kid actually knows what coaches want him and which ones are iffy. Maybe he wants to be able to play. You keep taking this as a knock on lsu and it’s not. It’s just simply that until very recently LSU and CBK didn’t recruit him. Maybe they didn’t need him. Maybe he’s not that good. Whatever the reason was, That’s obviously changed. But he didn’t sit around sulking and waiting/hoping LSU will offer. He made visits and went to camps. He made relationships and met people. He saw places he likes. Now lsu is after him for real and they have a lot of ground to make up.

He’s not a entitled turd that wants to be coddled- that I can promise you. Smart, honest, polite and well mannered young man. Very high character.

Good post. I never worry about a single player. And he's fortunate to have all these opportunities that are all basically great. All that aside, if he's a legacy and grew up in Baton Rouge as a Tiger fan, he should swallow his pride and be a Tiger. It really doesn't get any better than being a Tiger. LSU is the whole enchilada and all his friends and family can watch him ball.

You ask, “Do you not see this?” , and, respectfully I do not think many of us do.
What is an “offer”?
Is it always (or ever?) “young man, I am extending to you a scholarship offer to play at my school”?
Or does the offer come in other, more vague terms that gives the coach an out when he wants to back away from the kid?
Asking.

They extend them bonafide written up offer with fancy graphics.

The kid got an offer a month before his senior year and 8 months before signing day. There's nothing token about it. Maybe it wasn't in agreement with the timelines Matthews expected but that's something else entirely.

Did he try to commit and was turned away? That’s the only way you can consider an offer as a “token” offer

No. I asked if you're saying Brian Kelly offered the kid despite not really wanting him.

The other day I asked if the offer was committable and you said it was.

Maybe you're not good a reading comprehension. I thought my question was pretty direct, yet your answer was a bunch of BS about Alabama.

In reference to what is an offer:

I have two kids that play a major sport in D1 so I’ll use one of them as an example. keep in mind that this isn’t specific to Jordan, it’s merely an example of how different offers can be.

Oldest, plays at a big school but not power 5, received probably half a dozen “offers”. One of which was from lsu-their ultimate dream school. The lsu offer was(in a casual conversation) -“you can come and play here if you want. You won’t get any money and it’s unlikely that you’ll play, but we’d take you here.” Real offer? Yeah i suppose so. But it was honestly just a courtesy to a hometown kid if they wanted to stay home and we’re going to lsu no matter what. No hard feeling. Kid was honestly not quite big enough to start power 5 and they knew that. But it was definitely an honor to get an “offer” to walk on.

Another school-smaller d1 school, came on strong from the beginning. Called one day and offered on the phone that night. Said we’d like to give you a scholarship to attend here. Please come visit and we will give the details. So we go up there coach says “you’re our #1 target. We want you here no matter what. Your offer has no timeline-I will make room for you no matter what. We live your game and You will play here on day one. If you commit somewhere else, your offer here is still good. If you sign somewhere else we will always take you as a transfer-bottom line we want you here.” They hand us a folder with the full offer. All in writing, all signed by the various people that had to approve it. All of it in total detail. Great offer. Obviously had a great chance to play here.

Another coach. Another d1 school calls. “Hey, we’ve seen you play and would love to have you here. I will give you a scholarship to play here but you have to decide soon-gotta finish the class”. We had never been to the school but loved what we saw. We had a few visits scheduled other places and couldn’t get there for a few weeks. By the time we could get a visit we see a social media post of someone committed at their position. Coach calls and sure enough says that the class is now full. Sorry we couldn’t connect good luck. Was it commitable? Yeah if we commit sight unseen and without meeting the coach in person. Also it was obvious my kid was a spot filler. No hard feelings at all it just is what it is.

Another school. Coach calls and says he wants to establish a relationship. So they start talking. Coach calls at least weekly, calls after games so we know he was watching online. Coach has us up for an unofficial visit. Says my kid is the type of character and athlete he wants, but wants to see X and progress in Y and Z. Still calls weekly. Says he notices the changes. Then he comes to some games in person. Then wants to do another visit, unofficial again to get to know the team. It was still a few weeks later before he calls and says he’d like to offer a scholarship, there
Were no details at that time. A few weeks go by, they still talk everyday basically at this point and he’s still going to games, and he finally gives us details on the offer and wants us up for an official visit. Sounded great. At that visit they laid it out in specifics on paper what the offer entailed. Obviously this coach was interested all along but calculated. He was honest all along. My kid plays at this school today and does well. Has really enjoyed it and had a great relationship with the coach.

All of that to give you some perspective of how different one offer can be from another. None of this is specific to JM except that I’m trying to help you understand that there’s offers and then there’s offers. Six weeks ago JM had no offer at all from lsu. He got one the day after bama offered without really being recruited by lsu. That’s the “token offer” I referenced bc that’s what it was. Maybe y’all don’t like the term token? Call it what you will but I hope you can see the difference. Lsu is on him now. Here’s hoping things change in the 11th hour.

You could have saved a lot of typing for everyone had you just explained what you meant when you were asked you to clarify this

Some posters were genuinely asking how it worked. Some were combatively arguing me no matter what. Some think I’m taking shots at LSU. I was trying to answer all of them in one post.

There were several staff hold-overs familiar with Matthews when he was offered by the old staff last year. I honestly think Kelly had slept on in-state recruiting until this summer. Don’t know if it was Notre Dame syndrome, or just took it for granted, or what.

At the end of the day, Matthews has his offer. His FOMO is going to be higher than LSUs if he does not choose to play there. LSU will move on, he will always live with it.

I don’t know if he told the staff to get their guys that they already had their relationships with from their previous job and once they got on board, it has been full on instate recruiting building those relationships.
