Interesting take on Grimes Dandy Don/Mike Detiller

Mike: I would have no 100% answer on Grimes, but his offensive lines have always took midway into the season to come around. But I can't blame the issues versus Alabama and Florida on Grimes. That was Les Miles. He wanted to recruit offensive linemen from the inside out. He grabbed a lot of center/guard types and then swung some of those guards to tackle. On most college teams, KJ Malone and Maea Teuhema are left and right guards and don't play tackle. Toby Weathersby of the three is the only true tackle.
This is me talking now. I would build from the outside in. I would grab the best center I could land each year and he could play center or guard and then my next three pickups are tackles. I want a left tackle, right tackle and a tight end who I can put some weight on and have him play right or left tackle because he is athletic. You have to protect the edges versus teams like Alabama, Auburn and Florida. This team has struggled in that category. That will take some time to redo and I certainly wouldn't blame Grimes for that. That was a Les Miles philosophy.
Personally, I'd never thought of it like that but it makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of times CLM tried to make square pegs fit in round holes, esp at qb. Why would OG/OT be any different?
I remember Grimes being a really exciting hire with a great track record. Folks (including me) we're ready to show him the door after Bama. I hope he can turn it around with our new look offense and for the sake of recruiting continuity.

It does make a lot of sense. LSU has a bunch of guards playing across the line. We need those tall athletic tackles to protect the edge.

This is the most coherent thing I believe he's ever said. But the idoit always acts like he is close to the team and he can't even name 1/4 of the players

A lot of his insights aren't very good, I don't know if I'd go that far but I agree to an extent.
That said, this stood out to me as one his better points.

Yes, and this is because Miles insisted on playing Pocic at C when he is a T. I know, broken record, but it starts there.

Left Tackles (that can protect against the top notch pass rushers) are hard to find. That's why we don't have many. It's not because we thought we could take guards and make tackles out of them.
You have to recruit to all 5 positions of the OL.

I've been saying this for a while. Miles philosophy resulted in recruiting guards almost exclusively. Hell, the best tackle LSU has had in the last 4-5 years ended up playing center.
It's been a major issue.

Les Miles was an offensive lineman and as a position coach was an offensive line coach. Those positions he should understand.

The TE comment nails it. Since true tackles are so hard to come by, you've gotta look at this. Situations like former Miami and NFL tackle Eric Winston. Dude was #1 TE coming out of HS in Tx. Miami put weight on him and the athleticism was already there.

Yea, why do you think some of our best OL under Miles now play OG in the NFL. Thats all he wanted. Fits right in line with his philosophy. He was a stubborn idiot.

well, for once, he made a couple good points. especially the TE to tackle thing. I thought we maybe should've tried to bulk up a guy like Mitch Joseph and try him at tackle. or even try Dillon Gordon there.

Mike is talking like college recruiting is the NFL draft. It's not like if you get a 5 star offensive guard commit it takes a potential 5 star offensive tackle off the board. In college recruiting you can get them both.

Absolutely!
Do not care which team, or which coach, if you can breakdown the opponent on the edges (speed or force) they weaken the middle and lose options in play selection.
Other than QB, biggest target every year should be OT IMHO. Without the proper OT, especially athleticsm/footwork, you're always going to struggle somewhat.

Makes sense 100% and what most of us have complained about for years. Seth Stewart and Austin Deculus are the guys we need for the OL. We really should be loading up on OTs this class. I know a lot question why we're not recruiting Ealy, but that's because they see him an OG, not OT at the college level. Bama's OL are so dominant because not only do they have road graders inside, they have elite tackles outside. They dont need constant help from TEs and RBs on rush ends to protect the QB. You free up that TE or RB to run routes, suddenly the offense has another weapon. They have stay back and block, that just gives you 1 less option.
Chidi is a guy that absolutely needs to step up next year. He needs to man that LT position with Weathersby out at RT. Have Malone at LG, Clapp at C and Teheuma at RG.
