quote:Yes, yes, and yes. One common definition for "cheat" (intransitive) is simply "to violate rules or regulations." That's why all those acts are punished.
Is pass interference or holding cheating? How about illegal motion?
Also, no, no and no. Using another, more loaded definition, "to defraud or swindle" (implying unethical conduct), it's not "cheating."
My whole point is that, depending on your perspective, it could be "cheating" or not. There is more than one reasonable point of view here. "Cheat" has both a emotional, ethical definition and a basic, non-loaded definition.
quote:So then, for you, the question that determines whether a violation is "cheating" is whether the rules violation in question is a natural part of the game or not?
Its hard to define cheating, but I know it when I see it. Fouling Shaq late in a the game is not cheating, even though its breaking rules to gain an advantage. Throwing water on the court, so an opposing player slips and turns the ball over is cheating. One is a ntural part of the game, the other is not.
quote:Golfers, lawyers, doctors, husbands, wives, etc. all break rules (or outright "cheat") and turn themselves in all the time. You do it to avoid greater punishment when you will almost inevitably be caught. You also do it because you made a mistake and it's the right thing to do.
As for NCAA rules violations. Why would someone cheat and then turn themselves in? Again, I'm not trying to say LSU is squeaking clean by any means. A rule was broken, the player never played, the school self reported and was punished. That's breaking a rule, not "cheating". If they were cheating, they would have lied about it and covered it up.
Also, assuming you are talking about the McCarthy-Hicks situation, McCarthy and Hicks most definitely deliberately "cheated" (under any definition), lied about it and covered it up, and that cheating is imputed to LSU because they were agents of the university.

So, Robinson is a 4 star CB who runs around a 4.3 and is 6-2, 185 lbs?
I like.
I mentioned the "stars" not because I think that is the end all, be all, but just because for those of us who don't break down tape on every recruit, it is just shorthand to help us understand where a recruit stands overall.
