How long have they been doing this? What got me to thinking about it was a friend of mine who was highly recruited when we were in High School. Just wondering where he would have been ranked. As far as I can remember he received over letters from over 100 schools and got in home and in school visits from some big time head coaches.

There have been publications for a long time, and the newspapers typically rank their top 25 of the state or metro areas. The Internet really brought all this out and made everyone a recruiting expert and started the star rankings. The first "star" rankings I know of on a national scale on the Internet was Rivals around 2000 or so. That's just my two cents though.

i was new to CFB in 2000 and i don't remember stars being really prevalent in that spears/clayton classw (2001)

i remember b/c people would always call them 5-stars but couldn't link to the place giving them those stars

the star system was certainly around in 03, b/c i remember being perplexed at JR being a 5-star...pretty sure it was there in 2002 b/c my boy JV got 5-stars from rivals and that was big news. so in that 01-02 era is when they really started as a prominent variable

Rankings are just another method to make money off of high school student athletes, mean while they can't college a penny for their three minutes off fame. Also these ranking has only a 50% chance of being accurate. If an athlete doesn't attend camp,he will not be none on those sights as a athlete who does. For every 5 star Russell, their is a 2 star Claiborne.

I was talking about DL. JB and Henry didn't get much if any attention from D-1 schools. I just thought about it the other day and wondered where he would have been rated. He was very highly recruited for that time. Got in home and in school visits from some legendary head coaches. I guess a 4 star, but who knows.

Good teams under Martin, that wing T was deadly. I still remember sitting through that monsoon at St paul's
