LSU 2001 signing class
#7, 8, 13, 19, 38, 91, 95 national rankings....and all from Louisiana. Just ridiculous.

Wow, that was a hell of an early enrollee class.

Killed it that year. What a class.

The funny thing is that Travis Daniels is the only guy outside the top 100 that ever really contributed much at all out of that class. Those 8 guys in the top 100 all killed it though.

That's still my favorite LSU class, but mostly just because they're my age and I played against some of them in junior high and high school.
26 signees and we hit on 13 of them. And some we hit on big time. That's a pretty good percentage.
ETA: By hit, I mean they made meaningful contributions or started. So some of the hits were role players, but that still counts IMO.

David Jones, Melvin Oliver, Ronnie Prude all played key roles. But no doubt that class was about the big fish.
Rick Clausen contributed eventually...

David Jones was a legit starting TE for a couple of years. Melvin Oliver led the team in sacks. Prude played a lot. You are pretty much right though, it was as top heavy as it gets. '99 and '00 class had a lot of great o line signings and athletes like Reed, Domanick Davis, Devery, and Toefield. 2002 class helped us very little, unfortunately....Skyler Green, Nate Livings, Cameron Vaughn, and Kyle Williams were the only notable guys in that class.

I played against Laron Landry....I've seen the guy literally tackle people in baseball.

No Ronnie Prude and Melvin Oliver were both big contributors as well.

I doubt we can surpass the 2001 class. If we get Fulton, Mullen AND Carter...????
Then it will beat the 01 class
Then it will beat the 01 class

Great, great class.
Turning point?
1999 class was #1 in the nation according to rivals (if memory serves). Dinardo recruited quite well and the myth/notion that Saban inherited a train wreck is ridiculous.

'99 had some serious contributors. Not a lot of guys panned out, but the ones that did were just ridiculous....Bradie James, Trev Faulk, DD, Toefield, Rodney Reed, Lavalais.

Brodie Croyle was #2? FB recruiting services have increased so much it's insane.

I just don't understand all the LSU fans that act like Saban entered with a zero talent team and went "poof" now you have talent.
LSU way under performed in 98/99 though the 98 team was decimated by injuries. 99 too, to some degree but it was time for Dinardo to move on and CNS was a great hire but he also had a lot to work with.

Croyle was a celebrity at Bama for a brief time. I think he was injured often.

I understand that. There was some pre-existing talent for sure. Saban really influenced recruiting the state though. Although, like you said, '99 was a legit class full of LA talent.

DiNardo drained the swamp left behind by hallman and poured the foundation. Saban built a mansion upon that foundation.
DiNardo did some good things and recruited well. He just lost control of the team.

A few notes:
- Wilkerson was so unbelievable and a 4.0 student and Saban left him in that fricking game too long.
- Clayton and Spears from the BR area was such a great momentum thing among local high school recruiting but…
- Marquise Hill is the most important recruit to LSU since Faulk. Fournette is close behind.
I remember seeing Clayton play basketball for Christian Life at my school and take off for a windmill dunk from just inside the free throw line. Our fans started cheering for him

Agree, for the most part

He brought back the magic and slayed the visor wearing dragon, plus he rebuilt the fence.

Not sure I agree with this.
98 had massive injuries and 99 had a few too, and an Ill advised D philosophy that pretty much got him ran...
