Doubt they'll give out money for food. You could probably get a LA Purchase card though.

After Katrina - The state gave an LA Purchase card to those within the mandatory evacuation areas that were unable to return to their homes. Don't know about "lost power" areas, though.

If you need help a local food shelter might be able to provide assistance to help you get by initially.

If you have homeowners insurance, there's usually coverage for this that is not subject to the hurricane deductible.

You could sell your computer or phone from which you are posting.

make sure you keep the damaged food to show the adjuster, they like to taste test it to make sure it's bad.

Pictures and an inventory sheet should be sufficient. There's likely a "cap" on the coverage.

A good adjuster will say "there's no proof it couldn't be eaten".

Lost food in this circumstance is covered by homeowner's insurance subject to the policy deductible, of course.

Check the policy, or with the agent first. Check to see if the hurricane deductible applies and if there is a limit on food. I bet you will find that it will not be in your best interest to file a claim just for food...

That is not how State Farm policies work.

Don't claim $2k in beef and $1600 in shrimp unless you have the freezer space to hold it. I have seen it attempted with one fridge/freezer combo...

After Katrina they had people getting credit/money for lost food. I would not do it, but I know many financially well off people who did. One was a doctor's wife. I am sure it wasn't based on income.
