What is the rule of thumb for placement of outdoor LED recessed lighting in the soffit? How far apart? What angles? etc?

Our home is one story with the soffit about the normal 7 or 8 feet off the ground.

At a minimum, however many inches wide the fixture is, you want at least that many feet apart.

4" diameter fixture = 4 feet separation

i would submit that spacing them in conjunction with openings or other structural items is more important. ie if you have 3 equally spaced windows on a wall, place a light between each and one on the outside of the ends. you want symmetry and balance.

in that pic i would not have gone with the lights in the gables, i don't like how that looks...

Agreed. There needs to be a lot of symmetry when using soffit lights. The mix-matched gables look terrible with the lighting. This would've been better off to have wired in-ground spotlighting.

I have a ranch-style house as well and just sort of spaced mine along bare/blank areas - not above windows.

Those in the picture look way too bright. I have 4” LED puck lights that have adjustable light color and put mine on 2700K. Much softer look.

Or put a dimmer on them

Go to youtube and look for the Lighting Doctor channel. There is tons of information there.

There’s too much harsh light in your example photo. I would not recommend soffit lighting for your style home, but mix decorative with architectural. You should selectively light the facade and put focus on your door way. Layer the lighting with landscape and up lighting. Not the other way around.
