I have been helping my son and his friends build a camp/shack for them to hang out in. We currently have it wired to a 12volt deep cycle battery with a invertor to power a few lights and a fan. We have been looking at the small portable 2000 wattish generators as the next step. Should i just extend the wires i have to the invertor (14/2 I believe) outside to the generator? or should i wire up a small breaker panel and have the generator power that? i know the generator has circuit breakers built in but i didn't know if i needed an additional small panel. the biggest load would someday be a small maybe 10,000 btu ac unit.

Do you mean 2000 watts for the generator?

If you are only powering an A/C window unit and some lights, then you really don't need a small breaker panel, but it would be nice.

I would install a small sub panel in your shack. It will give you much more flexibility in the future to add circuits if you want to put more outlets, lighting, etc.

Also, if you ever planned on running an underground feeder to the shack to ditch the generator, it would be much simpler to terminate the wires at the panel.
