I’ve done some research and can’t quite seem to find an answer to my question. If I need a single pool valve actuator that moves a 3-way valve twice a day on a timer, what sort of automation, controller do I need? I don’t have any other automation needs.

In case you’re interested in more context, I’m considering buying a replacement pump motor (using existing pump wetted parts) that is a variable speed and has its own timer/programming. I’d leave the pump on 24/7 at a low rate recirc’ing the pool only. In the evenings, I would like the spa overflow working for a couple hours, while the pump is at a higher rate. To do so, I need the valve actuated. I currently have a single speed pump that only runs in the evenings with the waterfall operational, using the old Intermatic timer.

Is there a simple actuator controller that isn’t intended for comprehensive automation? If I have to add $1k of automation just to enable use of a VS pump, I’ll just stay with my old 1-spd.

I suggest you head to trouble free pool. Those guys know pool parts and there a quite a few people I have seen that used basic actuator motors with something like a rasberry pi to control things.
