"John Deere has announced the signing of a strategic partnership with EGO and its parent company Chervon. Under the agreement, EGO’s lineup of over 70 battery-powered lawn care products will soon become available at John Deere dealers...."

"The company continues to innovate, introducing new technologies like autonomous tractors and has recently begun advertising a zero-turn electric mower (seen below). Although the veteran equipment manufacturer has made vows to introduce more electric products, it still sits like a Deere in the headlights of other companies like EGO, that are already selling dozens of all-electric lawn care products around the globe."

"The company are also discussing the possibility of developing future equipment together. "

Does John Deere have any battery powered equipment?
If not, this makes a lot of sense since Ego is a quality brand

They have an all electric zero turn. And in the golf business they've come out with a all electric greens mower recently.

I just want a sub $1000 ego reel mower.

I know they have the allett but that bitch is 6 grand. Seems like it would be easy for them to build. And they would sell a shite load of them.

I was trying to figure out how sharing an article is getting me downvotes. Guess I now know why

Yep. I get battery devices are political due to being shoved down our throats when they're not ready but it's not a bad thing for John Deere to hedge their bets and partner with a great company doing ev stuff.

That's more about automobiles than lawn equipment. My EGO brushless mower kicks arse. It has about an average 60 minute run time on a full charge of the 7.5 Ah (have had it for 2 years), but will sometimes can be lower because some of my lawn gets thicker than the rest. That difference shaves off maybe 5-10 minutes at the worst.

There are battery powered tools that are way more convenient to use than gas. Blowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, and edgers are way more efficient and reliable than their gas counterparts. Really all you're concerned with is the motor. Gas has more working parts that can go wrong. Albeit replacing a motor on an electric tool could end up costing more than replacing parts on gas, but their reliability is much higher.

I also think that EGO having the multi-head system is a MUST for anyone who is looking to either convert or buy their first set of lawn equipment for an average sized home. Major space saver and ease of use.

I think a big part of the John Deere deal adds EGO's commercial tool system to those locations. They've got a bigger selection of commercial lawn tools than they had when I first bought my mowers.

i think this is a minimum battery size for a mower. its *close* to the range i was getting with my toro superrecycler but honestly if i didn't already have a 5ah battery from some other tools i think it would be a tough sell without a backup.

i have 4 batteries (7.5, 5, 2.5(2)) and its almost too much; when the massive 7.5 dies i can either throw it on the charger and move to edging/string trimming/blowing w/ a 2.5 or go ahead & put the 5 on and finish.

the 7.5 recharges in about an hour and if you're doing other lawn tasks, its literally ZERO inconvenience. certainly no more of a hassle than refueling or having to run to the gas station because you're out of gas.

No dog in this fight, but I've run my lawnmower out of gas before. Didn't check the tank prior to starting.

It takes about 5 minutes to go get the gas can, fill it up, and it starts on the second pull. Under 30 minutes max, if I had to go get more gas; which I don't because I have several cans. When I get to the last one, I go refill the others.
*And I cut often enough, that the ethanol in the gas hasn't been an issue for me ever. And if I really cared, there's an ethanol-free station about 10 minutes away.

I would imagine the cost to recharge a battery would eventually beat the cost of buying a comparable gas mower + the cost of refueling. I have no idea how to calculate that, but if someone here wants to mess with that, the 7.5 Ah battery has 420Wh capacity

Hard to say... it seems people tend to forget that batteries don't last forever. Stated minimum is about 3 years, most make it around 5 or so, but begin to degrade.
I have a couple Ryobi 18v that are weak, and one that just won't take a charge anymore. With Ryobi, that's not too big an issue; but Lowe's lists the EGO 7.5ah battery at $399.

The degradation of a battery that gives 60 minute runtime is not bad. Say you lose 25% of your charge at MOST (and that's a pretty wild drop off) you will go from 60 minutes to 45 minutes. By then you can just recharge that while you work on other parts of your yard with the small batteries and tools.

Even losing 10% (54 minute runtime) you are not facing a whole lot of drop off.

exactly. its not an cross-country drive where waiting an hour or 2 for a battery to charge while sitting at a gas station ruins the trip; even when i had a gas mower i stopped after doing the front yard to edge & blow before moving to the back, crack a beer or 2 and try to recover from the HEAT. that gives your battery time to charge.

my fitbit says i walk roughly 20,000 steps between front and backyard including the edging & blowing. i go through the 7.5 and the 5 and there's more than enough power in one of the 2.5s to do the string trimming and blowing so i'm never waiting on a battery to finish anything.

if you can go 20,000 steps without taking a break in this heat then you're in better shape than i am.
