A few days ago I noticed that there was a giant clump of ice in the ice maker which to me looked like water had just been dripping out of the ice maker and freezing a bunch of cubes together. At this point it was still making ice...just also leaking and causing an iceberg. Now my ice maker has totally stopped making ice....any ideas what's going on here?

ice can sometimes get jammed in it and it snowballs until it freezes into a lump.

take it out and make sure its all clear, beyond that if it doesnt work then the motor burnt out in it and you need a new one. they are usually under $100-$150 to replace the whole thing

I've had an off and on issue with my Whirlpool side by side making ice, or I should say, not making ice.

I took the icemaker out and gave it a thorough cleaning since it looked like the tray the water sits in had some mineral deposits. It is making ice like brand new now. I think the scale from the deposits were not allowing the ice to break free and get unloaded for some reason.

Or, maybe I just got lucky for the time being. Oh, and I do have a water filter on the thing that is changed when needed.

I’ve done this on a couple occasions, ran warm water over it in the sink to make sure all ice in the unit was melted, re-Intalled and it unit worked fine. Another occasion the ice maker did have a bad motor (you can run a diagnostic procedure to verify a bad motor), and I was able to replace motor at minimal cost ($20 motor from Amazon, DYI replacement) and it fixed the problem without having to replace the entire unit.

I’ve learned to keep a few old fashioned ice trays around to make ice cubes until I can get around to fixing it.

The heater strip goes out and it freezes up. Order a new one, most models are easy to install.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The lazy arse in me has to ask a potentially stupid question.... would it be possible/advisable to pour warm water over where the ice is made while still installed? I ask because I have a pull our bottom drawer freezer and the ice maker is tucked in the corner on top of a shelf... it's going to take a serious contortion act to get it out after seeing where the screws are.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the symptom, but it sounds like you are saying water is leaking out of the ice maker down into the tub holding the ice.

If so, a couple of issues I’ve found with this are A) the inlet valve is going bad and not shutting off the water in time or B) the tray is not level.

I had an issue with B) recently and when leveled, no more leaking.

There is a timer mechanism that you can adjust fill time, but that shouldn’t be the problem unless it’s been tampered with.

I had similar issue and my ice maker never started working again. I bought a new icemaker off Amazon and did step by step instructions on youtube. It's been good for the last year. The directions are very clear and easy to follow on Youtube.

they also have some ways to trouble shoot it on youtube. May want to follow the trouble shooting video's before buying a new ice maker.
