I plugged in some string lights to an outdoor GFI outlet and it tripped the outlet. I could not get it to reset, so I replaced the outlet. The green light is on on the outlet, but it still does not work. I tripped all of the breakers in the box off/on, and still no juice. What could be wrong with the outlet?

Did you check that the line and load are in the same spots as the previous outlet?

Yes. All wires are in the same spots. The old outlet had an orange light that came on. The new one is green.

When you pressed the reset button on the new one did it click?

No. The old one did the same after it popped.

Those are working as they should.

I changed one that did this, and indeed, I had the wires swapped. Check them again.

Ok. Will the reset button work once it is taken off of the power supply?

The light on some GFI‘s will still come on even if you have them hooked up backwards. Meaning you have the power coming in on the load side and the power leaving out on the line side which is backwards

Maybe it's not the receptacle.

My GFIs were hooked on a GIF breaker and would flip the breaker all the time. Check the breaker to make sure it isn’t tripped

i just went through this, i had the wires in the exact places as before... it did what you are saying.

I had to wire them in the alternative spots and it worked. The ground on the other side of other and +/- on the other side.

use a voltmeter to check to make sure the wires at the outlet are hot?

You've done enough. Call an electrician. Electricity is one trade I'm not screwing around with and that comes from experience.

Could it be that the breaker for that circuit is an arc fault breaker and it needs a rest for that also, not just the main toggle on the breaker?

By the same spots are you talking about location on the receptacle or did you physically put the line to line and load to load. Some manufacturers have the line and load opposite on the back of the receptacle

If it’s on an arc fault breaker replace the breaker. Arc fault breaker’s are shite

Not sure, but this sounds like something I experienced. Replaced the gfci in the garage twice & backyard circuit and never would hold the reset.
Finally figured out there was an outlet that had gotten moisture and gone bad by the front door. Replaced that and it's been good since.

Make totally sure there's not an un-accounted for receptacle outside.

Any fuse on the lights? Might check too see.
Any lights out? Might break the circuit.
Any broken wire cover on the lights? Might overheat and trip the gfi.
