Garbage disposal crapped out last night after 8 years. I believe it's an InSinkerator Badger model. Not sure if anyone has had to replace or purchase one recently but anyone have any recommendations? Looking to keep it under $200. I see that my local Lowe's has a little higher model InSinkerator in stock for $150, however I don't mind waiting a few days to order a better one if anyone has any suggestions..

TIA

Get the best, quietest ISE you can afford. The Badgers tend to be much louder than the newer evolution models. I think I have a 3/4HP Evolution (silver?) and the only thing that jammed it was when I managed to get a loose metal measuring spoon into it. Thought I killed it, but I was finally able to unjam and hit the built in reset button.

I replaced my old one last year with the (IIRC) 3/4 HP Evolution. Night and day difference, the new one is much quieter and way more powerful than the old. more than $200 though.

Moen GX50C Prep Series 1/2 HP is what I replaced our POS GE contractor special that came with the house. It's much quieter and only $100.

Consumer reports top model is GE GFC1020N -
quote:

Test Results

SPEED 4/5
FINENESS 5/5
NOISE 3/5

Highs

It was very good for Speed
It was excellent for Fineness

Lows

It was judged good for Noise

Second is Moen EX75C Under $200 everywhere

SPEED 3/5
FINENESS 5/5
NOISE 2/5

Highs
It was excellent for Fineness
Lows

Those are the only two they recommend, Moen is a best buy.

Third best is InSinkErator Evolution Compact. Not a recomended model.

Consumer Reports is garbage, reviews by and for the simpletons. That "top" rated model only has some parts in the grind chamber made of stainless steel, the top model Insinkerator's have 100% stainless steel components. The #1 thing that fails in garbage disposals after shaft seals are the grind chambers after corrosion due to acidic/caustic foods and cleaning agents. Same with the Moen, galvanized steel is only marginally better than untreated steels used in economy models.

Looks like my local Lowe's has the 3/4 hp evolution model in stock for $229 and I found some gift cards. Now to remove and replace it.. should be fun

ISE is still the gold standard for disposers. I wouldn't play with any other brand.

Moen is the best overall when comparing like models. Better motor is the main difference.

If you’ve currently got an in-sink-erator, I would go and buy the best model that brand offers. Buying the same brand is important because if you get the same brand, it will directly connect to all of the existing connections. If I remember right you just basically slip a couple of pins in and that’s it.

1HP Evolution Excel, it's $400+ but its what I put in my parent's house after my dad tried to put artichoke leaves through the previous one.

If he fricks this one up he's getting an LC-50 and paying for it this time.

The reviews of small appliances is based on performance.

They tell you exactly how they arrive at their conclusions. is a long lasting piece of crap appliance really better than one that does its job very well and last 80% as long as the crappy one?

Here is how they rate the three items they rate garbage disposals on. For us simpletons. that is.

quote:

How We Test Garbage Disposals
Consumer Reports tests garbage disposals on a number of factors. For our speed test, we grind pieces of beef rib bones for 1 minute with cold running water, then measure how much food is left in the disposal. The more food that’s left, the longer it takes to grind and the lower the score.

To see how well the disposals grind food, we toss a mix of bones and raw vegetable scraps into each model and run the resulting fragments through four different-sized sieves to gauge fineness. A garbage disposal that garners an Excellent rating turns out food particles fine enough to slip through most of the sieves. If bigger bits are left over, there’s a greater chance the kitchen sink drain will clog—and that model will receive a lower score in this test.

For noise, we measure the decibels emitted while the disposals grind a mix of bones and vegetables. In general, we find that the quieter models are heavier because they have more insulation.

did you even read what clames said about their reviews?

A few years ago, I got an InSinkerator Evolution Select Plus 3/4 HP. It was a little more expensive but I LOVE it. You can hardly hear it. I think my old one was a Badger and the nose level on the Evolution is incrediblely more quiet compared to the Badger.

The model I purchased and installed from Lowe's last night was labelled the evolution quiet series, so that has to be the same one I got. Easy to replace and install and works well upon initial testing.

The one I replaced was a badger 1/2 horsepower. The 3/4 horsepower new one is noticeably a bit quieter with a cleaner sound. The old one had a lower pitch sound with more vibration.

ETA: would have been nice to get it 60 bones cheaper though
ETA2: Not as noticeably quiet as first thought. About the same.

I didn't claim to refute him just stated what the reviews were.

Consumer reports does a reasonably good to very good job of providing data within the parameters they state. Just a tool for people to use in decision making. Clames factors are also important.

Personally I like data. I don't think Consumer reports is for simpletons but perhaps I am a simpleton so who knows.
