Do yourself a favor and buy a faucet washer and screw set for your outdoor spigots.

I noticed my water hose dripping a bit from where the spray nozel connects to the hose this weekend. I thought I hadnt tightened the faucet handle good and tightened it some more. Well about 6 oclock I noticed it was still dripping. Took the hose off the faucet and it started pouring out.
Took the faucet apart and the washer and screw on the back of the stem were missing.

Sucks, but ill just run to lowes and get what I need. Nope, they dont sell replacements washer or screws. Maybe I could have found something to work, but without a washer in hand I really didnt know what size I needed or screw really for that matter either.

So, bought a whole new assembly and just got done installing it under the house. I went ahead and replaced it cause the other one was 20 years old, a little beat up, and probably needed to be replaced.

But 36 dollars and crawling under the house versus a 50 cents or less easy fix that didnt require me to go under is a big difference. Ordering some extra washers and screws off amazon to keep on hand right now.

I replaced one of mine in December 2022 when the only foot long piece of PVC left in my plumbing succumbed to the 4° temp. I replaced it with a piece of Pex and a Pex hydrant. It made it through the hard freeze back in January when we got ice and an 8° low. I may look into getting the screws and washers.

Could you have bought an attachment the screwed onto the spigot and had a ball valve.. I use them on end of my hose to be able to change from sprinkler to sprayer attachment without having to go back to the faucet.. I did this on a leaky faucet once until I changed the faucet out completely.

Had to do that the other day until I can figure out how to change it.

Yeah, or I could have just put the hose back on cause it was a slow drip with it until I ordered some washers. But I already had the faucet apart and was already at lowes, and like I said the other one was old and the handle beat up a bit. If it was a newer one I would have come up with something else to hold me til I got some washers in.

But since I was already committed I figured I'd finish it, lol

I've never lost a valve washer and screw. Once, trying to replace a washer in an outside faucet, I pulled the whole stem assembly, left the packing nut on a handy window sill and went to a nearby ACE to get the correct washer replacement. Returning to the task a few hours later the packing nut had vanished never ever to be found again... squirrels?

I would have thought packing nuts were standardized and interchangeable. Not so!

Well equipped ACE stores had a few drawers of various-size valve seats and washers...at least they did 10 years ago.
