Are solar panels worth it?

Live in Hill Country, TX, between New Braunfels and Boerne.
We get solicitors almost daily asking if we want to purchase solar panels. We've resisted so far.
We're going to live in this house for another 4 years, 5 tops.
Are they worth it?

Not worth it unless you live in the house for a long long time

Not unless you are getting some major subsidies from your state….and then only marginal.

Not for your time frame. If you are going off grid you can use used panels that are pretty cheap and then you can really put some KW up. I'm doing a barndo build north of Gonzales with separate service panels. Most everything will be on the off grid one but with redundant plugs by food storage and a few light circuits that will be on Grid. I'm not really looking for savings, but service. We're a long way from a stable grid and the EV's are making it worse daily. Had a rolling blackout two weeks ago. If they hit you mid afternoon and your house temp rises much, then you're looking at an AC run time till well after dark.

This for sure.
We purchased our current house with solar panels on it already.
It did not add any value whatsoever to the house and can actually hurt the sale of your home if you don't purchase the equipment out right.
We would have not purchased this home if the solar panels were not 100% payed for and having no obligation to sign into a contract with any service company. We only had to pay $200.00 to transfer the warranty into our name which we have had to use. Poor old owners just got them like 5 years before selling to us so we got 25 years of warranty on a product we didn't pay for.

They are absolutely not cost efficient.
Solar panel salesmen will tell you all sorts of lies to get you to buy. They are the snake oil salesmen of the 21st century.
PS Howdy, neighbor!
