I'm trying to decide if I will aerate my yard before I put down about a yard to 1.5 yards of sand to level. I've always read to aerate in summer but I was hoping to level the yard this spring. I may just put the entire project off until summer and do some more research until then. Thoughts?

Also, do you clean up the plugs from the aerating or do you just mix them back in with the sand for the leveling?

ETA: nevermind. Aerating can be done at any point from what I understand, however putting sand down should be done when your grass is actively growing, which is generally May - June.

You can leave the plugs to add that nutrition back to your soil. They will break apart and integrate back into your soil in a few weeks.

Aerate in the spring. If you have heavy clay you can top dress with sand right after you aerate. Don't remove the plugs.

That's the best sand to use.

I'm also planning on top dressing my front yard this spring. How much sand will I need for ~10,700sqft?

My yard is around 14,000 sf of grass and I'm planning on getting 10 tons and going from there.

For what that's worth. I have some pretty big issues though. I may need to bring some dirt in first to grade the wash outs

From my research you shouldn't apply more than 2" to any one spot. I am going to apply 1" to ensure the grass grows through it.

1" would be 33 cubic yards or 45 tons. I hope you got some heavy machinery for all that.

That would for a perfect 1 inch layer over the entire yard. It doesn't lay down like that when there's peaks and valleys and highs and lows.
