Editing the OP with new/updated images just shows a link, will not actually show the picture. What's also weird is that when hitting preview, it shows the picture(s).

LINK

It's a year old thread that's kept up to date with the new phones each year from Google so maybe the site changes over that time are why?

I believe images turn into links after a set period of time, I know if you go to old threads that's the case, and I vaguely remember them explaining it as such. It was due to the whole image hosting thing where certain sites were suing forums and websites for using images they put copyrights on. Best bet is to use known image hosting services instead of hotlinking, like imgur.com.

Yeah but what about in this case where a thread gets updated, and new pictures are used?

Year old thread, but I deleted the images that were last years phone for example, with images that released yesterday of the new 2015 versions, so the images are brand new, but they still just show a link after they are submitted despite showing the image in preview.

It has to do with the original age of the post (I believe older than 30 days), and editing with new images doesn't change that, they'll still turn into links after that time. If you upload them to a hosting site like Imgur and link them from there, the images will show up regardless of post age, so that's the best bet.
