images converting to links in old threads

I noticed this the other day when a few people were talking about old threads from the now closed Election 2016 forum
seems like all of those old threads had the images not showing up, but links were there in their place (clicking the link would take you to the image)
is this a default feature of the site?
just curious...

Been like that for as long as I can remember for pics that was hosted on an image site.

I believe it's got something to do with bandwidth. It is automatically done on after a certain time IIRC.
