16 yr old son broke it into 3 parts (football). Surg next Mon AM. Not a simple fx that only requires immobilization. His clavicle looks like a Z. Doc says recovery is faster actually with a plate. Says he can start non-contact running etc in 4 wks. Anyone here have this surgery? What was your experience? Son of course wants to know when he can resume playing. Thx.

He will have a sling for comfort for short of of time (few days wearing as needed). Shoulder motion as tolerated. Probably would give him a weight limit considering he's a 16 yo who would take weight bearing as tolerated to the extreme. Likely no contact for 8-12 weeks depending on X-ray/healing.

Thank you. Feel bad for him. My son is tough as nails but he's hurting bad. Still has his sense of humor though. He says it only hurts when he breathes & when we ask him if he needs anything he says "A new collarbone..." Surgery is Monday morning then he should get relief soon thereafter.

I had a very similar break almost 2 years ago to the day from a car accident. I’m mid 20’s and was in incredibly good shape and had a plate and screws put in to repair my clavicle. The surgery was successful, but it took almost a year and a half before the inflammation went away and I could exercise again without pain. I would recommend doing the thrower’s 10 and going to physical therapy if needed. As frustrating as it is, the biggest thing with a broken collar bone is patience
