Got a 3pm tee time at a cheap course ($29 w/cart), playing with a friend, both of us bringing a young kid (under 3), and his dad is riding not playing.

I’ve brought my kid to this course to ride with me probably 15 times, never had an issue or anything. Well they charged my friend an extra $17 for a “cart fee”, since his dad riding meant we needed 2 carts, kind of lame but whatever.

I go to pay and they also charge me an extra $17, I question it and they say well since you took an extra cart that’s two spots so $17/each. I said but if I played as a single you wouldn’t charge me that and he said yea but it’s two spots. I told him that makes no sense then he tried to say he was charging me extra because my son was with me, which has never happened and wtf he’s a toddler charging for him???

I pointed out that charging us an extra $34 was actually more expensive then us just paying for his dad to play, he didn’t seem smart enough to understand this because he said we were paying $17/each so it isn’t the same….

At the end of the day, it’s just $17, it’s a shitty muni and I had my son with me so I wasn’t going to cause a huge scene, but next time I’m there I’m going to talk to course manager (if they have one). Because I know for a fact that isn’t the policy because I’ve done this same thing at this course a ton, plus charging us both an extra cart fee when we took one extra cart doesn’t even make sense. This guy clearly had a hard on for being “in control” and really seemed like he was trying to get me riled up so it would start yelling or complaining which is why I just let it go and went on to play my round. But it was definitely weird.

Had this happen to me once at a shitty muni. Had my young one with me who had been out there for free since he was literally a month old. Then on day, when he’s two and still with no clubs they try to charge me. I still played that day, but haven’t been back since. That was 11 years ago.

Municipal golf is a public service and its best interest is to "grow the game" and then they do petty bullshite like this.

One time my BIL, myself and my then 4 or 5 year old nephew went and played Tennison Park in Dallas on a summer day. The cart girl took the small soft ice chest that had a couple of waters and fruit for the 5 year old on the front nine, like 5th or 6th. My BIL is pretty nonconfrontational, but I went in that club house and came unglued on the manager after the round. A 5 year old can't be in 100 degree heat for hours with no water and the cart girl was, of course, no where to be found afterwards. They didn't give a shite, and I haven't been and won't go back. frick them, plenty of other public options where they don't act like imbeciles.

This is exactly where we were playing…

What’s silly about the whole situation is it’s not like the guys doing this to us is making extra money by over charging us it’s a city course. He’s just being an a-hole to be an a-hole and because they were nearly out of carts. And again an extra $17 for the 2nd cart I’m okay with, but not making us both pay it when we only had one extra cart.

It’ll be awhile before I go back there

It's owned by either the city or the county so it's literally meant to be a public service and those are the biggest bunch of dikheads I've ever encountered at a golf course.

Course I grew up on was a top 50 course in the country at one point. In Golf Digest and had pictures in all the magazines. Course was sold twice then the third owner ended up being city owned. Turned into a “muni” with out the muni name but rock hard fairways, overwater the greens, and all they do is push money. Superintendent is a complete moron. Overwaters the greens and under waters the fairway. shite goes dormant because they don’t water it.

Get a membership….pay extra for range balls. Have a cart of your own…..$4k extra a year. It was crazy.

I quit that place with the quickness and joined a private club 45 min away from my house. They treat you like gold and because your further than 35 miles from your house you get national rates for membership fees.

I worked at a golf course where this was a policy. I hated it and wouldn't charge it, most of the time. I understand it, especially if it ends up turning the group into a three cart group. Carts aren't free, they need to be charged and they require maintenance, which is the reason for the fee. It just isn't a good look.

No one should have an extra charge for a kid to ride or play. Sub 18 with an adult should be free. #growthegame

Wait. The cart girl straight up took the ice chest off the cart? I’ve never in my life heard of that.

I’ve snuck beer onto courses many times when I was younger and used the coolers. The cart girls never once gave a shite. I’d be fuming if they took water and fruit for my son / nephew.

Maybe the course is just trying to get strict on not having people that aren’t playing golf spread out all over the course ‘hanging out’. Or maybe they’ve had issues with the “my buddy is just riding along’ crowd when they were actually playing.

Seems petty but the muni’s sometimes have to be a lot stricter because of the random riff raff they encounter on a daily basis.

Not sure how you waited until the end of the round.

I'd have lost my shite the second she tried to take the ice chest.

And was it your little cooler or theirs? I would have doubly lost my shite if she had tried to take my property.

Maybe they don’t want (nonglolfing) kids on the golf course?

I’ve seen a couple of instances where kids were running around everywhere while two dads were plying. Maybe it’s a liability issue if your kid gets whacked.

I don’t see the big deal. If the course says no kids, leave em home. They need to say as much though.

The best part about the course I stopped playing was that it was one we’d all call a “goat ranch.” Then 4 years later they closed, turned the course into a farm raising pigs, cows, and you guessed it, goats. The clubhouse became a meat market that’s actually quite good.

So it converted from a metaphorical goat ranch into an actual one.

I’d be happy with a pre high school age policy. Once they get to HS they are on golf teams and some are good enough they are playing with the adults. I was as a kid. Maybe free until HS, then show your HS ID for a half price rate. That’s how you grow the game and honestly, the good word from the policy would increase play as all of us dads know, there’s not much better than spending the day on the course with your kid.

Oh damn y’all learned the hard way that the kids running Tennison are clowns. It’s by far the worst customer service at a muni in the metroplex. There’s been at least half a dozen issues brought up about them this year on just this board alone

I played at Tenosison once in the 5 years I lived in DFW and that was enough.

Much better options at Cedar Crest or up North at Firewheel or Sherrill Park for a muni

I think the thing you are ignoring is that a twosome should only use one carts. Maybe the course has been having issues with people taking advantage of stuff. If 4 guys show up with wives and just the guys are playing then a 4some is taking up 4 carts and that’s not cool. I get why you are upset but you never know what other people try to pull.

The mall is free. Babysit them there. If you really want to play, you’ll pay to do so. That’s a better plan for growth IMO.

So the better plan for growth is the adult not go at all and the kid never get introduced to the game? Makes sense to me.

Paying extra for a cart is just a money grab. I was a member at pelican point and it was a flat fee and I was charged extra because I using their carts. So I purchased my own cart and then I was still being charged extra because it was the wear and tear my pelican point approved club cart was causing on the golf course - it’s just bullshite and a money grab.
