Getting Juniors Interested in Golf?

I have a young BIL who needs a reprieve from his video game habits. He seemed to look interested in learning to play golf today when I let him swing a few of my clubs. Since I just started playing again, I think this is a great idea to get him outside and be able to spend more time with him in a positive way.
Does anyone have experience in introducing the sport to young kids? He is 10 and I want to make sure I help him learn at his own pace. Second question is about clubs. I can’t see myself investing $150+ on something that he may quit after a little bit, at least until he shows enough interest in it. Does anyone know of club rentals or any ideas to save on the initial cost until he decides if he wants to play?

Take him out to the course and just have fun - spend good time together. Go to the course when it is not busy so y’all can take your time and not be pressed.
Spend time on the putting green and chipping green with him. Also at 10, he will be a sponge with a PGA pro to learn fundamentals from if he has any interest.
You can pick us some used US kids clubs for the cleap on eBay.

I took my son at that age and let him drive the cart and he enjoyed that more than playing. He hit on only a few holes (only play 9 at that age). The only instruction I gave him was hit towards the hole.

I started my kids playing in the back yard at young ages. Never forced it on them. They had cheap clubs to mess around with. My son is 9 and he has shown an interest in starting to play.
I took him to the course the other day for his first time to actually play. He played 10 of the 18 holes (holes with no water or major trouble). He played from the Red tees. Only lost 1 ball. Made doubles and triples on most of the holes but he had fun and actually got a little better as the round progressed.
He is going to do a 1 week clinic with the golf pro on July 16th. Hopefully he enjoys golf as much as I do and we can start playing together.

I think I’m going to start him at the range so he can get a feel for just swinging naturally without the pressure of competition. His father has made him awfully insecure at being less than excellent at any sport.

This is the goal also.
After a couple days I can tell that he wants to give it a try. I wouldn’t mind investing in him after a couple months of good interest and practice.

I started taking my daughter very early. Just let her hit a ball or 2 every couple of holes if I wasn't holding the course up. At 9, I got her into lessons. Like you said, they are a sponge at that age. I don't push her but it seems like she is kinda hooked, but she also has other hobbies she does as well that competes for her time. I think at some point she is going to pick one and scrap the others, I just hope golf makes the cut because that could get her a scholarship for college.

I started playing again about a year ago and my then 7 year old jumpped in with both feet. My younger started on his 4th birthday and both love it. I take my older one with me when I play some, let him hit from the tee box for fun then he plays the front 9 from the kids tees.

Best way for me is to have other kids join in the fun. We play a scramble with Dad/kid (or how ever you identify yourself). We also participate in the drive, chip and putt. Never won but helps get him wanting to get better and play more.

My oldest is 9 and doesn't really like sports yet. But I signed him up for a free 3 day clinic in Lafayette starting tomorrow for a couple hrs each day. I will go from there. He is somewhat excited about going, but once he's there we'll see how he is. I hope he likes it and we can build on that.

buy some clubs ... cheap set ... forget about par ... no hitting from the white tees or grey tees or whatever ... hit from 100 yards out each time ... teach him to punch the ball (develops a basic understanding of speed/hand & eye coordination) ... and, unlike the vast majority of dipshits playing the game today, show him what golf actually teaches about life ... accept the consequences ... plan accordingly ... confidence in what you do ... maintain the course for other players ... etc ...
edit: and no lessons ... you can teach him everything he needs to know for now ... swing, go find it, and hit it again ...
good luck ...

I was started by dad with practice balls. Whiffle balls for golf.
Back yard.
Miniature golf with dad for putting.
Driving range for driver. Mom speciality.
Eventually went around with parents. Then lessons on irons 3 through 7. Parents taught driver and short irons.
Played a lot of par threes
before being let loose.
