Carter Plantation or Santa Maria

Looking to book a last minute tee time for tomorrow. Both have openings.
I've never played at Carter plantation. It's $50 right now because greens are being top dressed.
What does the golf board recommend

Played Carter Saturday. It's in fantastic shape. Fairways and greens are lush. Carts off the path after the rain last week. Enjoy!

I actually played both today.
They are both in great shape, but I'd pick Carter. SM was in nearly as good of shape as CP, but I couldn't handle the crowd at SM. People were everywhere and they had foursomes lined up to tee off until well after 5 this afternoon. CP was crowded, but not nearly as much and they had Marshalls making sure play was moving.

I play Santa Maria much more frequently due to convenience only (I'm in BR) but I much prefer Carter Plantation. Not sure as to current playing conditions at CP but you can expect heavy crowds tomorrow at Santa Maria.

Ain't nobody got time for that!

Why does Carter not get more love? Granted I'm probably biased because I live less than 10 mins away and play there a lot
- The layout is great, and there are plenty of challenging holes.
- It's typically in great condition.
- When the greens are good, they are damn good and some of the best in the area
- First rate practice facility
- Marshals that actually do something and help maintain pace of play.
- I regularly get on there for <$60. You can catch rates all the time for $49. Meanwhile Oak Knoll is $45 all day. There's no comparison.

I never pay more than $50 at Carter. Twilight fee on weekend is $50 and $40 during the week. Includes range, etc. I also live like 5 minutes away. Oak knoll doesn't even compare, and they seriously raised their prices in the past year.

I've never heard anyone talk bad about carter. I personally think it's a top 5 public course in the state. I think it's just the location that sucks

I really don't understand what Oak Knoll is trying to do. They charge so much over what they are worth that its laughable. If they cut the price in half they would get so much more business

I've been told Oak Knoll has a pretty dedicated membership that'll cut that check every month until they die. So basically the membership doesn't need your money.
I hear people all the time shitting on Carter, here as well. It's never on any top lists. Spoke to a marshal out there and they hosted a Open qualifier earlier this year. USGA Rep was very complimentary of the condition and layout
Tough holes out there too.
-#3 is an elevated par 3 two tiered green with your only bailout on the left side. Miss right and you're either OB or hitting a bunker shot to the putting surface above your head. Long and you might as well pitch it back to the front and try again uphill.
-#8 on paper should be a simple hole. Metal to the landing area followed by a short iron to the green. Except here's another two tiered green with trouble right and long.
-#13 is a beast of a par 5 with fairway bunkers and a green surrounded by sand and water.
-#14 is a 298yd par 4 surrounded by bunkers and the green sits up around 15 ft above the fairway. I've had many a chip shot run back down the hill to me from landing short.
-#16 is a long arse 4, #17 is the signature par 3 with the green extending into the lake. Depending on the wind you'll hit anything from a PW to a 6i.

agree, I play it quite a bit, just over a 30 minute drive from mandeville, really cheap for the quality of course, love the practice facility, pace is always pretty good.

Carter is great fun.
Lot of ties to LSU with the staff. Top shelf.

Ehhh the part of dedicated old guys is true. They are just starting to run out of them. My uncle was a member for 30 years until about 2 years ago.
But I agree with your Carter hole breakdowns. It may not be the most scenic course but it is always in top condition and has enough wrinkles to keep you on your toes.
