I am interested in the Board's thoughts as to the appropriate response if you/your group is hit into by another group without a courteous "fore" and assume for sake of the question that it is careless play not completely accident that resulted in the situation. How should this situation be handled?

Then assume that the same thing happens a second time during the same round with the same groups involved. How should this second instance be handled?

Thanks.

1st time. You yell at them, and let them apologize.
2nd time. You line to their ball and hit it into the water

Dude I played with turned around and hit it back to them once.

I was mortified, but it didn't happen again.

If you go this route you have to hit it on target. Simply picking the ball up and tossing it in the nearest pond will suffice.

If no water close just pocket it until there is water close and throw it in there.

1st offense: Meh. May have been accidental. Maybe give them a look back.
2nd offense: tee it up in the fairway + 1st response
3rd offense: you're getting four letter words sent your way and maybe throw the ball OB or in a hazard.

Funny story, I accidentally rolled a drive up on a group of cultured folks at the LSU course. I just caught it good and mis-judged how far they were. Dude got pissed and hit it back at me...but he sliced it and almost hit a group on the green adjacent to me. Good times.

ETA: Oh yeah, then when I got within earshot he started jawing at me about respecting him and the rules of the game. Despite the fact he hit my ball back at me.

If you are 330 out or something and they run it up on you, then I think you give them a look and let it go. They could've just hit the drive of their life and didn't know it would carry.
If you are 250 out and they do it, then all bets are off and hitting it into the woods is fine.
If they have been waiting on you all day and you should have let them play through... then you are a Richard in this situation but they are in the wrong for firing at you

Depends on the situation, but if you're playing at a normal pace then

Was playing at LSU and a guy in the group behind us drove the green twice while we were putting. The guy seemed like a legit golfer. Just waited on the green and told him if you're going to drive the green, just wait for us to get off. We're waiting on the group in front of us every time and there's nothing we can do.

Didn't have a problem after that

If I'm in the fairway I just pick up the ball and put it in my pocket

If I'm on the green on a par 4 then I usually let it go and tell the guy "nice shot"

1st time- give them a look and move on

2nd time- run over their ball with the cart or heel stomp it so it plugs in the fairway.

3rd time- we will have an up close and personal talk

4th time- I won't know it because if it happens a 4th time, that means I got my arse kicked in step 3 and am on my way to the hospital, or am in a white hot rage that will result in the perp having the word "Taylormade" imprinted on his face from the back of my four iron!

Thanks for responses. My opening post was not accurately descriptive of my recent experience. I was playing solo, in fairway about to hit approach shot, two holes prior dog-legs right so a straight drive goes straight into fairway that I am playing. Group of three tees off (all standing on tee box) and a drive lands within 2 feet of me, same guy re-tees and hits another right at me ball lands 5 feet away. Neither time did anyone yell "fore". Group was 3 guys about my age 35-40, having a good time. They drive straight over to me (which tells me they saw where the balls were flying). My only response - "hey guys next time you hit two right at me how about a little heads up." One guy gets out of cart and not even apologetically says they didn't see the ball. To which I reply probably slightly frustrated "you hit two that landed within 5 feet of me, just pay attention next time and give me a heads up." This was not received well by their group and resulted in words which I ignored and went in with my round and resulted in more words from their group in the parking lot which I again ignored and went in my way.

Just relaying a story, lots of idiots out there.

Typically I go something like:

1st: Look back and see if they are apologetic or laughing. Apologetic = I laugh (sometimes the shot sneaks up) and break the ice. Laughing = I holler back about my displeasure.

2nd: I ask if they want to play through and see how their reaction is. If apologetic = I suggest they wait a little longer next time. If a-hole-ish = I explain that it won't happen again after waiting for them to meet me at their ball.

3rd: I hit that ball at them. If they are closer than 3w distance with nothing behind them I try to play it over them. If not I play it short of them.

4th: Only once it got to this and I called the clubhouse to let them know they had approximately 5 minutes before there was going to be a need for medical attention on the 12th fairway (mine or theirs). When the Marshall got out there I was reprimanded for not calling sooner and they were escorted off the course.

We were playing at LSU. It was some old frickers that thought we should be playing up if they could reach us from the tee box. I was playing with two guys that were just learning and they were playing from the front tees (red). This was in college and the other guy and myself were playing from the tips (blue) and had been playing the majority of our lives. They were hitting into the new guys from the second tees (gold), after the 2nd time when we talked and they told us to move up, I suggested maybe they should move back from the lady tees if they were so long they couldn't help hitting into us. That is partly why I was so pissed and hit back into them the next time.

TL:DR, I hate the old guys at municipal courses. They act like the own the place and have some kind of "member privledge". I have never had those issues at privately owned public, semiprivate, and private places.

not going to lie i have lost it on a course before. was walking off the front of the green and a ball flew right in front of my face. felt the wind (as if he thinned his shot) and everything.

i dropped to the ground as a pure reaction and next thing i know im face to face with the dude behind me ripping him a new a-hole.

he tried to say he thought we were off the green and everything and i told him he was full of shite bc we came off the front and the cart was still right on the path.

at the turn since pace of play was slow the marshal tried to pair us together and told the marshal i wasnt playing with that mother fricker. marshal was shocked and said whelp, ok then.

not my proudest moment in public but i tend to get heated when almost getting smoked in the mouth by a golf ball

Like many things that depends on the situation. If I am in plain sight and easy range of the tea and someone hits into me if it's a Pro V1, it goes in the pocket if not it's coming back at them.

I generally play really fast so it's really hard for anybody to play faster than me.

I got hit in the back once back in the days when I walked everything. I'm going up to 7th Fairway and I guy drives down from the clubhouse to tee off at the 7th. It's me dead in the back I picked up the ball put it in my pocket and kept walking. He drives up cussing me saying did you pick up my ball and I said yes I want it back I said it's in my pocket if you're man enough to take it to come on. He decided he would rather not

I've had an old man drive into me, during a scramble, and almost hit me while I was tending the pin on #2 at Lakewood for our team. I had to do a little hop to keep it from hitting me. We all looked at each other and kind of laughed, then said how it was fricked up. I didn't care. So as we all finished putting, they were pulling up to the green to hit their approach shots. I walked up to both carts and asked, in a sort of concerned tone but not yelling at all, "Who hit that ball off the tee that almost killed me?"

One of the guys walked up and started to apologize before I could say anything else and explain how the scramble tees are closer than he was used to, and how sorry he was.

Well I sort of knew that and was never really mad to begin with. I just kept looking at him like I was mad and wanted to choke him.

Then when I realized he was scared that I was gonna lose it, I started to smile, looked him and all of his friends in the eye, and said, "Too bad you didn't hit me because your team would be putting for eagle right now."

We all laughed.

you had to have been playing slow if a group of 3 was on your arse playing alone. if you are waiting on the group in front you could have asked to play through. Sucks for them to do that regardless
