Looks like the recent advances by AMD Polaris line of GPUs will mean big gains for consoles. Both M$ and Sony are sticking with AMD for their custom chips.

quote:

The six teraflop GPU is once again confirmed, with the GPU's compute power rated at around 4.5 times the capabilities of Xbox One. Four times more L2 cache is also confirmed - a new detail that does not tell us that much, except that that the GPU architecture in Scorpio is at least as modern as AMD's Polaris line. Based on our discussions with Mark Cerny on PS4 Pro, we can reasonably assume that Microsoft can customise its GPU core just as Sony did, with access to Radeon roadmap features up to - and perhaps beyond - AMD's upcoming Vega architecture. Microsoft gives away little here, other than to confirm that delta colour compression (DCC) is a part of the Scorpio GPU feature set, just as it is in PS4 Pro.

While all the marketing will be about 4K gaming. The real upshot here is better textures and 60fps at 1080p

First time in a loooooong time I may consider buying a console.

Games could run at 1080p 60 FPS as early as the PS3/Xbox 360 days. There's this illusion that it's the hardware that holds back the resolution/framerate, but in reality, it's graphics whore devs who can't stomach cutting back on the visuals for a smooth gameplay experience.

To a certain degree, I don't feel like I "have" to have 60 FPS. Sometimes as long as a smooth 30 FPS is maintained, increased visual fidelity is a nice tradeoff, but I do not accept any resolution that is lower than 1080p.

What is Project Scorpio? Is that the next console? Are we there already?

Thats relative. They have never been able to run smoothly with a texture level that looks similar to a gaming pc. These new specs gives the opportunity to actually run like a mid tier pc in both visuals and frame rate.

I'm the opposite. I would rather 60fps at 720p vs 30fps at 1080p. If it was locked at 30 and didnt stutter - maybe a different story - but usually thats not the case.

Why do you need textures that "look similar to a gaming PC?"

Makes no sense. If you don't care about graphics, you wouldn't mind less visual flair for a bump in resolution and 60 FPS. 720P blown up on a 1080p screen looks awful and makes the visual detail completely pointless.

Because gamers want the same experience on either device? Seems like a silly question.

Yes it does. If given the choice between high frame rate with lesser detail, or choppy frame rate at higher detail, ill take the smooth running option.

It's what the Consoles should of been on Launch. Xbone was not next gen. And while the PS4 might of been next gen compared to PS3, it wasnt all next gen either.
