Personally, I love the new PS4 controller and prefer it way above the Xbone's. i have both but prefer the PS4 to it by a mile so far.
Realistically from a new buyer's point of view, they are essentially the same machine. A few exclusive games here and there but still no real system seller out for either exclusively yet.

He says the Xbox controller feels more natural for shooters.
I think you should get a feel for both and decide
Also, if playing online with friends matters, then check with what they typically have.

I will agree with that. The xbox controller seems to get a few days of solid play while the PS4 controller gets a day of solid playing.

I have the kontrol freek caps on mine already and I like the thumbsticks being a little taller. Never had a problem with a thumbstick though either. I've heard a lot of people complain about it though.
The biggest thing for online gaming is figuring out which system most of your friends, or at least your favorite friends, have.

I have both and haven't turned either of them on in months. I like PS4's exclusives by just a very little margin and really want to play the new Uncharted game so I think if I could only buy one and was limited to either PS4 or Xbox, I'd pick a PS4.
But honestly I think the best setup right now is a gaming PC and a Wii U.

I love the XBox One. Being able to route my cable TV through it has truly made it my entertainment hub.
Saturday I had the ESPN up so I could flip through the different ESPN games, while I had the TV up in the corner watching the Utah vs Oregon game on Fox.
I also much prefer the XBox controller and I love the Kinect

Gaming between the two is pure preference of games. I prefer the Xbox One games, others PS4. Most of my friends are X1 as well.
It may not be a big item for you, however I love the X1 as an entertainment hub. Football Saturdays are a breeze with Kinect. Never pick up a remote, just talk it through all the channels I want to watch.
