My boy is turning 5 and was looking to get him a gaming system. Figured a Nintendo was good for that age. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Just get him the original Nintendo. The only thing that has changed is the graphics. I would even argue the original had better games and peripherals like the gun and running pad.

the current system is the Wii U. They are expected to announce a new system this year and possibly have it out before the year is over.

Don't listen to Devious.

The best is an n64.

The latest console is a wiiu

The latest handheld I believe is the 3DS.

For a kid the NES would be best. SNES has the best library maybe ever (only other contender is the PS2). N64 has the best first party lineup ever, but third party support is weak.

I would look into getting the newest handheld. Unless you may want to play it as well.

What?

The New 3DS is the correct answer for 5yr old. Nintendo and other system makers do need to start making the UIs a little more straight forward with less options. A kid/child mode should be available for 4-7yr olds.

I was hesitant on the handheld ones because he already has an iPad mini.

N64 for console or 3ds for handheld. The 3ds would probably be easier to manage and allows you to play ds games as well but you could just go with the n64 for this: LINK

My favorites are the GameCube and SNES. N64 right after mainly for the two Zelda's and Rare games.
